“No.” He laughed. “Not in the least bit, but it doesn’t matter. You’re the one who’s got me thinking about settling down for the first time in my life. And I hope I’ve made you rethink not getting involved.”

“Yes, but until I sort out what happens with the children, I can’t make any plans.”

“So it sounds like you’re pretty seriously thinking about taking them in.”

“Yeah, I guess I am.”

He lost his appetite and pushed his plate away.

His phone rang from the counter.

“It’s Erik.” Drake grabbed it. “Tell me you have something for us?”

“We have months of data, but Nick’s algorithm worked like a charm in comparing the data from the telematics system to the infotainment system. You know this isn’t his everyday car, so very few trips to the grocery store, or of course, never picking up the kids from daycare.”

“Not like he could get car seats or boosters for all three of his children into this vehicle,” Natalie said.

“So whatdidyou find?” Drake nearly demanded.

“The address where he’d gone right before the accident. It’s in Cannon Beach, and GPS shows him arriving at the destination and crashed on the return trip.”

Drake’s heart started to pound. “You look up the address yet?”

“It’s a house in Cannon Beach. Sending a screenshot.”

Natalie sat forward, her eyes alive with excitement. “I remember Kirk mentioning that the family used to rent a house every summer in Cannon Beach.”

“But it makes no sense that he would need GPS to find it,” Erik said. “Or that he would go there at night.”

Thoughts pinged through Drake’s brain. “He could be having an affair, and it has nothing to do with the beach house they used to rent.”

“Give me a second to check property records.” Drake heard Erik’s fingers clicking on his keyboard. “It’s a rental listed on one of the rental sites. Owned by a Melissa Nagy.”

“I know that name.” Natalie locked gazes with Drake. “She was interviewed by the police. She’s a friend of Rebecca Vann, our third victim.”

Drake jumped to his feet. “We need to head out there.” He looked at his watch. “We can be there in little over an hour.”

“Don’t you think we should call Londyn?” Natalie asked.

“I say we first get eyes on the place and see if Gentry is present,” Drake said already thinking ahead to surveilling this place. “Then we let her know.”

Wind pummeled in from the ocean on the sparkling clear night, and Natalie shivered in the gusts. She would never in her wildest dreams—or nightmares—have expected that she would be hunkered down behind a sand dune and tall grasses with two former law enforcement officers watching a beach house for signs of a serial killer. Just craziness. Total craziness.

She’d been surprised Drake had agreed to let her come along, but at a distance they weren’t in any danger, and she was the only one who’d actually seen Kirk. So if he’d tried to alter his appearance, she would likely be the only one who could confirm his identity.

Not that they’d seen him. So far, they’d only spotted a light on inside the house, but no sign of movement. No cars in the driveway either.

Erik lifted his night vision goggles and looked at Drake. “What do you think?”

Drake kept his focus pinned on the house. “Best guess? He’s in there, but asleep.”

“No way to ID anyone unless they look out a window.” Erik’s discouraged tone mimicked Natalie’s frustration.

“The Radar-R is in the SUV,” Drake said.

“I’ll get it and do a sweep.” Erik duckwalked away.
