Sahira leaned awayfrom the demon and spat something out before bending over Zeth again. She wasn’t feeding on the demon; there was nothing intimate in her actions, but jealousy battered Orin like rapid punches to the gut.

The breathing he’d kept steady while running became labored and hectic when he forgot to concentrate on it. His nails dug into his palms as he stalked toward her, determined to yank her away from the demon.

He started to yell at her to stop when she lifted her mouth from the demon’s neck and spat yellow bile across the ground. She’s sucking the poison from him.

Orin halted a few feet away from them. He tried to get control of the tumult of emotions battering him but didn’t know where to start or how to handle this influx.

Did he tear her away and drag her from the man? She’d hate him, he had no doubt, and she’d fight him every step of the way, but when she bent to sink her fangs into the demon’s vein again, everything inside him spun.

He was adark fae. His emotions didn’t rule him… but that was no longer true.

Theydidrule him when it came toher.

She’d brought out more emotion in him than anyone else before, including his family, and as much as he hated it, he couldn’t stop it. When it came to her, he was as explosive as the lycans, a breed he’d always disdained for their volatile temperaments.

What has she done to me?But while he lamented what he was becoming, concern rose to the forefront of the tumult assaulting him.

“What are you doing?” he demanded. “That could poisonyou.”

Sahira glanced at him. “It needs to be injected into your bloodstream for that.”

“Youcan’tknow that.”

She couldn’t know it, but she chose to ignore his words as she bent her mouth to Zeth’s neck and bit deep. When he stepped toward her, she held up a hand.

Their gazes locked as she tried to draw the poison from Zeth. If he yanked her away from the demon, that would be the end.

He’d done some pretty shitty things to her, but they could still fight and fuck. If he tried to take her from her friend, he’d sever whatever strange connection simmered between them for good.

And as much as he hated what he was becoming, whatshewas turning him into, he couldn’t do that. It would probably be best for them both if he did, but he refused to lose her.

But she doesn’t know what’s good for her and needs to be protected. She could be poisoning herself right now.

Still, he didn’t move as she spat more venom across the ground. While he watched, a truth rose inside him.

He was many things, but a liar wasn’t one of them, and he was finally seeing things for what they were. Sure, he liked to play games and twist things to his benefit, but he was always honest with himself.

It wasn’t only the possibility of poisoning herself that concerned him; he didn’t want her doing this because he didn’t like her touching the demon. She really washis.

The horrible, newly awakened emotion of jealousy rattled him again as it took him to darker places than he’d ever been before, and he’d been to somereallysinister places. It clawed at his insides while Sahira worked to rid Zeth of the poison ravaging his system.

With his nails digging back the flesh from his palms and blood welling inside his closed hands, he recalled his words to her in the bathroom. What does it matter who I fuck?

He’d demanded an answer to his question, all while knowing she never had sex with the demon. She’d revealed her truth to him, but he’d kept his to himself.

Shedidn’t know he’d never been with the nymph or anyone else since she arrived in the Cursed Realm. He’d demanded an answer from her for something that hadn’t happened, and she’d refused to give him what he sought… confirmation she might care for him too.

But she had no way of knowing that’s what he sought, and maybe she hadn’t replied how he wanted because she didn’t know how to put it into words… like him. But standing here, he was given his answer as to why she cared about the nymph and those other women.

Thishorrible, useless, acidic rot of an emotion clawing at his insides over something as innocent as her trying to save the demon waswhyit mattered. If she’d experienced a quarter of this jealousy churning within her when she saw him with the nymph, no wonder she wouldn’t let it go.

Am I actually empathizing with someone else?

What iswrongwith me? What did shedoto me?

But he couldn’t deny it anymore. She meant something to him, he cared for her, and she washis, except… for her to be so, then he would have to…

What? What would he have to do orbecome?
