“I can,” she whispered.
“Then do it.”
CHAPTERSIXTY-FIVE
Sahira staredat Orin in disbelief; she couldn’t lower the shield and leave him with those things. They’d swarm over and destroy him.
They crawled all over the shield, looking for a weakness and determined to find it. If he was out there alone, with no one to watch his back….
He doesn’t have to be alone out there.Elsa could keep the shield over herself and Zeth while Sahira went out to protect Orin as he cut through the webbing.
All her common sense rebelled against going out there with these things, but she wouldn’t leave Orin to face this alone. That would be certain death.
“Can you keep the shield going without me?” she asked Elsa.
“You can’t go out there.”
“Someone has to watch his back.”
“I’ll do it,” Zeth said.
“You have a family to return to,” Sahira reminded him.
“So do you,” Orin growled, “and you’re not going out there.”
She shot an irritated look over her shoulder at him. “You’re not going out there alone.”
“I just have to cut through the webbing, and then we can all move on together.”
Sahira pointed at the things crawling over their shield. “They’re not going to let you do that.”
“They’re not going to have a choice. The longer we stand here and argue about it, the more they’ll come.”
He was right about that as more of them scampered down from the webbing. She opened her mouth to protest more, but they had to do something to get out of here, and no one had any other suggestions.
He could have his way… for now.
“Fine,” she grated through her teeth, “but you better make it quick.”
“As you know, that’s usually not my way,” he told her with a wink, “but your wish is my command.”
Despite her terror for him, and the growing number of spiders surrounding them, a smile tugged at Sahira’s lips. Only he could be so arrogant at a time like this.
“I’ll go with you,” Pip said as she removed her tiny dagger.
Orin lifted her from his shoulder and set her on the ground. “I don’t think so.”
“You saved my life; I will fight for yours.”
“And I’ll move much faster if you’re not with me. You’re staying.”
Pip held her dagger ready for battle, but he ignored her as he shifted his attention back to Sahira. “Let me out.”
Reluctantly, Sahira pulled the shield away from him and dropped it in place before her. When he was free of the protection, she rested her hands against the bubble as she gazed at him.
I can’t lose him.
The possibility nearly drove her to her knees. He made her crazy, but she’d miss the cocky, manipulative man with a heart bigger than she’d ever considered possible.
