She slipped her hands into the sleeves of her tunic as she bowed her head. “I don’t know why I said that.”
He wasn’t really in the mood to engage with her but found himself replying, “The universe beyond our worlds is a fascinating place.”
“So are the realms.”
“Except for this one.”
She bit her lip before replying. “This one is fascinating too, even if it is a nightmare.”
“That’s the polite way of putting it.”
She didn’t speak again as she shifted her attention back to the sky. Orin’s gaze fell to the blood on her pants. He couldn’t see the bite from here, but he suspected it fully healed while she slept.
“Are you okay?” he asked, waving his hand at her leg.
Pulled from exploring the stars, she blinked at him before looking at the injury. “Yeah. I think thatthingrattled me more than hurt me.”
“I’ve never encountered anything like it before.” And he hoped never to see one again.
“I wonder how many of them are out there.”
“I don’t want to find out.”
She chuckled as she leaned against the rocks and crossed her legs before her. It was then he realized she had no intention of going anywhere, and if she stayed, the scent of her would drive him mad.
Unlike her, he only had two options to feed from while they were here. Elsa was a very pretty witch, but she wasn’t the one he desired.
Rising, he stretched his back and legs as he lifted his arms over his head. He felt her eyes on him, but when he glanced at her, she was studying the desert again. She couldn’t fool him; she was as aware of him as he was of her.
When he prowled closer, she folded her arms across her chest. Her head turned toward him.
He stopped beside her and rested his hand against the rocks next to her head. Her chin lifted as her defiant eyes clashed with his. He saw the wariness in her gaze but also curiosity.
Her scent was a breath of sweetness in this land filled with the earthy, crisp aroma of sand and the muskier odor of the creatures who hunted here. And she looked better than she smelled.
When he ran his fingers over the sleeves of her shirt, she stiffened but didn’t pull away. Pushing back one of the sleeves, he saw her welts had healed and only reddened skin remained.
He relished the feel of her silken skin beneath his hand as her hands slid free from the sleeves of her shirt. It bothered him the demon had been with her after him, but he’d erase the memory of any enjoyment the encounter gave her from her mind.
In doing so, he’d ensure she never turned to the demon again, at least not while in this realm. By the time they were free of this place and back to their lives, he’d ruin her for all other men.
He could never turn her into one of the shadow kissed sex fiends the dark fae could leave in their wake; she was too strong-willed for that. But he could make it so she pined for him and found it impossible to turn to another while he was fucking his way through the realms.
First, he’d hear her screaming his name as she begged for more. Stepping closer, a bolt of desire ran through him when his chest brushed hers, and her breath caught.
When his gaze fell to her lush lips, she drew the bottom one into her mouth and nibbled it. He clearly recalled the taste of those lips and the fire of her kiss.
Her body had fit perfectly against his as they melded together and her fingers raked his back. While they were together, she was uninhibited in a way she never was, with her hair in a bun and her no-nonsense approach to life.
He’d enjoyed breaking down her barricades, stripping her bare, and her sweet curves. She’d been the greatest pleasure of his life, and he would have more of it.
His hand slipped down until it found hers. Lacing his fingers through hers, he grasped her hand. While his fingers tightened, her grip remained loose inside his, and her breath came faster, but she didn’t stop him.
He held her eyes before turning her to face the wall. He expected her to pull away; instead, as if she could no more resist him than he could her, her fingers clenched around his.
Something more than excitement and lust pulsed through him as he gazed at her bent head and exposed nape. In this position, she was vulnerable, but she trusted him not to harm her while he plotted to stomp all over her heart.
He almost smiled with satisfaction but couldn’t resist kissing her nape. She trembled as he ran his lips along her tender skin, savoring her taste.
