“Then stay away from him, because if you look at him the wrong way, he’s dead.”

“And justwhatis the wrong way, Orin?”

“I’ll know when I see it.”

“You’re such an asshole. You don’t see how hypocritical and cruel you are. You have no idea of the suffering you cause or the destruction you leave in your wake. We’re not pawns in some twisted game of yours; we’re living, breathing immortals with hearts and souls.”

“He’ll keep living if you stay away.”

“There are times when I truly hate you.”

He suppressed the hurt her words caused. She could hate him until the end of time if she was only withhim; hate would make the sex more intense.

“As long as you don’t fuck him again, I’m okay with that.”

Her eyes flitted away before returning to him. “I’m not telling you this because I think you deserve any insight into my life, but since you’re such a psychopathic douchebag, and Zeth is too good a man to be caught in your twisted, dark fae bullshit, then you should know. I would never forgive myself if you two fought over something that never happened.”

Orin’s head tilted to the side. “What didn’t happen?”

CHAPTERTWELVE

“Zeth is married. He has a wife and a son at home,” she said. “That’swhy he’s in this desert with us and why he tried to leave the town before; he’s determined to break free so he can return home to them. We never had sex. He hasnointerest in me sexually because he’s in love with someone else.”

Orin kept his shock over this revelation concealed, but inwardly his mind spun as he tried to process what she was saying. “You’re just saying that to protect him.”

“No, I’m not. Ask him tomorrow; he’ll tell you he’s married, and if you think about it, you’ll realize he was never withanyof the women in Belda’s town.”

Orin contemplated this as he tried to recall the demon’s actions. Yes, he came into the pub alone and left the same way, and he couldn’t recall ever seeing the demon with anyone. Still, he was usually too focused on himself to pay much attention to anyone… other than Sahira.

He could have been there or left with other women without Orin knowing, but if Sahira was lying, he could easily confirm it by asking the demon. Marriage didn’t automatically equate to faithfulness, he didn’t know any immortals who ever ventured from their spouse, but the demon had been here for a while.

His father had sex with other women after the death of Cole’s mother, but she’d died, and he was a dark fae who required sex to survive. He’d slept with those other women but never loved any of them.

Many immortals never moved on after the loss of a spouse. Zeth may not have seen his wife in thirty years, but he’d most likely remain faithful to her while he believed she was alive.

“But you fed from him,” Orin said. “That can awaken bloodlust in a vamp.”

“I did, and I’ve fed from plenty of others without being consumed by bloodlust. I’ll feed from many in the future without losing myself to it too. Zeth offered me his wrist, and I took it;nothingelse passed between us.”

A smile tugged at the corners of his mouth. “So, you’re saying I’m special?”

Her mouth dropped a second before she smashed her hands into his chest and pushed him backward. “You’re my biggest mistake, the one that keeps kicking me in the ass—the one whowon’tgo away. I always knew I’d regret sleeping with you, and you didn’t disappoint, but you continue to make that mistake so much worse for me! You’re the most selfish asshole I’ve ever had the misfortune of meeting, and I want yououtof my life.”

She turned on her heel and stomped back toward the entrance. She was ducking down again when he spoke.

“All those things are true, Sahira, but you’re forgetting one thing.”

She paused to look back at him. “And what is that?”

“You want me as badly as I do you.”

She gave him a look that said she’d prefer to see him hanging by his balls before giving him the finger and disappearing into the cave.

Orin grinned as he crossed his arms over his chest and leaned against the wall. Despite his delight over her revelation, her words, while true, stung a little. He was sure plenty of others had considered him the same and worse, but it irritated him that she did.

He’d always enjoyed being a selfish asshole and saw no reason to change. Why would he change perfection?

But why would she feel any different? You’ve never given her a reason to.
