The floor-to-ceiling windows surrounding them allowed the silver radiance of the moonlight to pour into the room. Judging by its location in the sky, midnight was approaching.

“Speaking of tracking spells,” Orin said as he pinned Sahira with his ebony gaze. “I think it’s time you took off the one you have on me.”

Sahira didn’t look at him as she continued to stir with a pensive expression. Finally, she lifted her head and smiled at him. “I don’t think so. Cole asked me to put that spell on you; I’ll take it off when he decides it’s time.”

Orin scowled at her as Sahira smirked and returned to stirring her potion.

“He would want it off,” Orin growled.

“Then he can tell me that. Until then, it stays.”

“Is there anything else you can do to locate Cole?” Brokk interjected and shot Orin a warning look.

When Kaylia tossed in another herb, sparks shot out of the cauldron. “Not unless we catch him or get some of his blood.”

“The blood might be an option if he gets injured during a fight,” Maverick said.

“The chances of that are small,” Brokk said. “Plus, how would we tell his blood from the copious amounts he spills from others?”

Lexi’s nose wrinkled at the reminder, but he was right.

“We have no chance of catching him,” her dad said.

“He’ll come back for Lexi,” Maverick stated.

Great, now she was also bait. Like she didn’t have enough going on in her life, but shewasthe only thing they could count on to draw him forth. So, that meant it was a waiting game until he decided to bless her with his presence again.

Lexi crossed her arms over her chest and watched as the dragons’ shadows swept over the land. Some were outside the room, looking in from the ground. Her connection to them told her they were there but hidden by shadows; no one else would know they were there, watching, waiting, and protecting her.

And now she was waiting too, and she hated it. There had to be something more she could do. Well, there was plenty more she could do power-wise, but she still didn’t know all of it.

There was so much untapped potential inside her; maybe some of it could help her find Cole. She needed to learn more about her heritage and what she could do.

She’d learned a lot about her abilities since first discovering she was an arach, but there was so much more to learn. Unfortunately, she didn’t think there was anyone left who could help her.

Kaylia, Alina, and Elfie had done their best, but Kaylia and Alina didn’t know anything more. Elfie perished during the war.

Lexi now lived in the home of her ancestors; therehadto be answers here. She’d been so swamped since taking the throne that she hadn’t explored this place, but it was time to start.

The Lord could have destroyed any answers that might have resided here.

The possibility was real, but not one she was willing to entertain. She kept running into depressing dead ends. She needed this olive branch of hope.

“I have to go,” she announced.

Before anyone could say anything or protest, she turned and left the room as a small pop sounded from the cauldron.

CHAPTERTHIRTY-FOUR

The shadows coiledand slithered as they dug deeper into the host. They wouldnotlet go. They wouldnotlose their hold over him.

They’d finally gotten their freedom and wouldn’t relinquish it, but the host kept fighting them. The host sought revenge; it wanted its enemies dead, but it also wanted the woman.

Thosethingshad attacked her inherrealm, and the host seethed with the knowledge of it. The damn wolf and dark fae pieces of the host wouldn’t relinquish their hold when it would be so much simpler if they would let the shadows seek their vengeance.

It’s not like those two halves of the man weren’t looking to kill too. They were as eager to eradicate any threat to the woman, and they were good at it. But no matter how hard the shadows battled for control, they wouldn’t let go.

The shadows hated them; they wanted them dead, but they couldn’t get rid of those pieces. Those two sides of the man were a part of the host and, therefore, a part ofthem.
