CHAPTER 60
Logan’s skin splitopen on his battered hands. His blood coated the glass, and one ofhis hands broke, but he ignored the discomfort as he planted hisfoot against the glass and yanked at the door. The door didn’t somuch as quiver.
“ELENA!”
The door at theend of the hall flew open and smashed against the wall. Itrebounded, but someone caught it before it slammed shut.
Footsteps bouncedoff the walls as Asher, Nathan, and Declan rushed toward him. Thepanicked expressions on the faces of his friends propelled him totry harder… even they believed this was the end.
They would try totake him away from her, and he couldn’t allow it. If this truly wasthe end, he would hold her for it. She wouldnotdiealone.
They skidded to ahalt outside Elena’s cage and stared in wide-eyed disbelief as sheemitted a low keening sound. Lowering his shoulder, Logan gave upon trying to tear the door free and threw himself into it. Itrattled a little but held firm.
“The key, Nathan!”he shouted. “Give me the key!”
None of themresponded as they broke into motion again and ran toward him. Before he could stop them, Nathan and Asher grasped his arms. Theypinned them to his sides as they lifted him off the ground andcarried him away from the door.
Logan screamed, kicked, and twisted as he thrashed against their grasp while moreof Elena poured onto the floor. “Let me go!” he snarled.
“You can’t go inthere,” Nathan stated. “We have no idea what she’s becoming.”
And that was whenLogan realized there could be something far worse than death comingforher. He went limp in their grasp as they carried himback a few more feet.
What washappening?Whywas it happening? It had been a few dayssince they last ran his blood through her system in the hopes ofsaving her. It failed the first time, but he wasn’t willing to giveup and was determined to try again.
That experimentdidn’t affect her when they did it; why would it have one now? Itmade no sense, but something had changed; something was happening, and it could be taking her further from him.
No,heinwardly whimpered as his throat refused to form words.I can’tlose her. She can’t die; she can’t become more distant, not afterall this.
Then, on her handsand knees, Elena released a scream that pierced his ears as itreverberated throughout the hallway. The torment in that cryburrowed through his skin, dug into his veins, and shattered hisheart.
When the screamcut off, none of them moved as Elena’s shoulders heaved. Then,Logan’s struggles renewed. He didn’t care if she was becomingsomething worse, something more monstrous and awful; he couldn’tlet her endure this alone.
She was suffering, and he had to comfort his mate.
“Let me go!” hespat.
He wasn’t asstrong as he once was; months of blood loss had weakened him, butrenewed energy and determination flooded him as he threw himselfforward. Red and black color mottled his flesh as the demon part ofhim surged to the forefront and sought to take control. It wouldnotbe denied what it wanted, and that washer.
Throwing his armsup, down, and up again, he ripped one free of Asher but couldn’tquite shake Nathan. When his friend continued to cling to him,Logan dragged him toward the glass. Putting his head down, he dugin his toes as Declan stepped in his path.
“No!” Loganshouted at him. “Get out of my way!”
Before he couldlunge at Declan and shove the man back, Asher reclaimed his arm andgrasped it in a death grip. Animalistic sounds tore from Logan ashe snapped his fangs at his friends and thrashed to break free. Nomatter how much he fought, he couldn’t succeed in escaping themagain.
Elena threw up onemore time before giving a hitching sob and collapsing onto thefilthy floor. She curled into a ball as she started to cry.
Her tears brokehis heart, and this unexpected sign of humanity caused Logan to golimp again. It was the first sign of emotion, other than rage, she’d shown since being injected.
What’shappening here? Did one of their treatments do this to her?
DidIdothis to her?
The possibilitywas so horrible, he couldn’t breathe as he tried to process it. Butas his mind spun and sorrow threatened to suffocate him, a small, whimpered word came from inside her cage.
“Logan.”
It was the firsttime she’d spoken his name in months.
