Caro’s headpounded. She had no idea how long she’d been unconscious, but shedidn’t think much time had passed. Or at least she hoped it hadn’tbecause, otherwise, that meant her life might soon be coming to anend.
She buried theterror such a possibility created and forced herself to hang limplyover the back of the Savage who carried her. Her nose wrinkled fromits putrid aroma.
She longed toblock her nose against the foul stench but didn’t move. Theycouldn’t know she was awake and preparing to fight.
Her leg throbbedfrom where the prick underground had grabbed her. Sheneversaw it coming. One second, she was stepping over the storm drain asshe strolled down the road, and the next, a hand shot out of thehole, seized her ankle, and yanked it to the side.
The scent of theother two Savages had masked the one below. That was her lastcoherent thought before she hit the ground and her head bounced offthe concrete. Everything went black afterward.
From there, theymust have moved quickly to get her beneath the earth. Otherwise,Saber would have stopped them.
Or maybe hewouldn’t stop them. She was a pain in his ass, and he was once oneof them. Maybe he’d decided to switch loyalties again.
But as thepossibility occurred to her, she knew it was wrong. First of all,he needed her to make the other swords. And he didn’t have theother stones to hand over to these assholes.
Second of all, hewouldn’t have switched loyalties. She didn’t know why she was socertain of that, but she was.
He acted like hedidn’t care about anything, but there was a reason he stopped beinga Savage. If he stopped being one of them, that meant he caredabout something at least a little.
She hoped it wasenough for him not to leave her down here to die with thesethings.
No… that wasn’tright; they wouldn’t kill her. They would change her into somethingshe’d prefer to die rather than become.
She had to fightsoon, and if she couldn’t get away from them, she would make themkill her. She’d never become one of these things.Never.
The stake tuckedinside her jacket pocket started sliding down a little as everystep of the Savage jarred her. If the stake moved enough, she mightcatch it as it was falling out, and if she did, she’d plunge itright through this thing’s back.
Until then, shewould have to wait. There were at least three of them. She couldn’tlet them take her much further, but she couldn’t start beating onthe back of this one without a weapon.
Alerting them shewas awake wouldn’t do her any good if she didn’t have a way to killthem. She would be nearly defenseless without a weapon and stillclutched in this douche’s arms.
She couldn’t letthem subdue, knock her out, or beat her into submission. She had tokill, or they did; there were no other options.
Saber could be onhis way, but she couldn’t count on him realizing they’d taken herbelow ground, and she couldn’t count on anyone else to save her.She had to save herself.
The Savage hadlocked his arm around the back of her knees. She hung like a sackof potatoes over his shoulder. Blood pounded in her ears, and herposition made her head spin, but the further they moved, the worseher circumstances.
She had no ideawhere they were taking her or how many waited ahead. Things couldgo from bad to worse soon if she didn’t do something now, and thedamn stake seemed to have gotten stuck.
Deciding to strikenow, Caro fisted her hands and slammed them into the Savage’s back. The man released a loud grunt, something cracked, and he totted acouple of steps forward.
The harsh movementjarred her stake free, and as it slipped from her inner pocket andout her neckline, she caught it! Unfortunately, the stabby end ofthe stake faced away from the Savage, or she would have ended himthere.
The monster wasalready recovering as he lifted his free hand to grip her legs. Shealmost shrieked when one of those hands grasped her ass.
The perv holdingher grunted out, “The bitch is awake.”
She’d show himbitch. Flipping the stake in her hand, she gripped it in both ofhers and plunged it into the monster’s back.
She couldn’t tellif she got him in the heart, as it was pitch-black down here, butthe man released a screech somewhere between a pissed-off cat andfire whistle. She might not have killed him, but she relished thesound of that scream.
A light flared onsomewhere. Not prepared for the sudden influx piercing the gloom,Caro twisted her head away and blinked rapidly as she tried toregain her vision, but she couldn’t remain distracted. She’dstarted this blind; she could finish it that way too.
Jerking the stakefree of the Savage’s back, she clasped it in both hands and aimedfor his heart as she plunged it in again. This time, the Savagewailed as he planted his hands under her and threw her away fromhim.
Caro tried not tolose her grip on the stake, but she couldn’t tear it free of thisthing’s back in time. After she hit the floor, she scrambled topull another stake free and lunged toward the Savage who droppedher.
She wouldn’tattack him again; she’d succeeded in getting his heart the secondtime. He still stood, clawing at the stake protruding from hisback. He would fall and leave her exposed soon, but she planned toget behind him to locate the rest of her enemies.
