Caro’s knee itchedto become reacquainted with his testicles. She kept it restrained.Last night, she vowed not to let him bring out that side of heragain, and she’d meant it. He drove her nuts, but that was noreason to attack him… even if he deserved it.
“I’m assumingthese are yours,” Saber said as the keys clinked in his hand.
“They are, and Iwould like them back.”
“Life is full ofdisappointments. If you want to go with me, I suggest you get readyand meet me in the car in—” He turned his wrist over to look at amake-believe watch “—eight minutes. You know which car it is.”
“I’ll be there infive,” she grated through her teeth.
Saber grinned ather. There was something so fun about irritating her. He relishedhow it heightened the color in her face and caused her eyes togleam. Plus, she deserved it after trying to turn him into aeunuch.
“Fantastic. Bringthe sword along with some weapons for yourself. Preferably somestakes and maybe whatever you already have in your hand.”
Caro grinned backat him, but it probably looked like she was baring her teeth athim. “Oh, I will.”
Saber blew her akiss and winked before strolling away. He felt her eyes shootingdaggers into his back the whole time and smiled.
CHAPTER 52
True to her word,Caro was at the car in less than five minutes. She’d changed into apair of jeans, a formfitting black sweater, boots, and alightweight windbreaker.
Tucked into theinterior pockets of her windbreaker were a couple of stakes. She’dslung his sword over her back and secured it there in case he gotany ideas about trying to take it from her.
As she strodetoward the car, her pace increased when she spotted Saber sittingbehind the wheel. She reached the driver’s side window and tappedit with her knuckle. He hit a button, and the glass slid down toreveal his smiling face.
“Yes?” heinquired.
“This is my car;I’ll drive.”
“That’s okay. I’malready comfortable.”
Saber smiledsweetly. There was that lovely flash of red in her stunningturquoise eyes he so enjoyed evoking. “Please, join me. I’m leavingin—” He glanced at the clock on the dash. “—one minute.”
“You’re notdriving my car.”
“But I am, and youcan either get in or stay.”
“I have yoursword.”
Some of hisamusement vanished. “I’m going hunting with or without it.”
He needed to kill;the impulse had been building for a while, and he had to unleashit. He’d prefer to be able to test his sword, but either way, hewas going to kill something tonight.
Caro grabbed thedoor handle; he’d locked it. He smiled at her as he rolled up thewindow and focused forward.
Her templesthrobbed from her rising blood pressure as a red haze shadowed hervision. She didn’t have to go with this asshole.
But shedidas the sword burned into her back; she required answers. She had toknow if it would work against living Savages. And if it did, shewould have to make more weapons. They had to stop those things.
When he shiftedhercar into drive, she gritted her teeth and jogged aroundthe front of the vehicle. He unlocked the door and smirked as sheopened it. Caro ignored him as she pulled the sword off her back, lifted her chin, and slid inside.
“Glad to have youaboard,” he said as he hit the gas.
Caro smiled at himas she rested the sword across her knees and stroked the hilt. Whenhis eyes fell to it, his jaw clenched before he looked away.
When they stoppedat the gate, he turned expectantly toward her. “I’m not telling youthe code,” she said.
“Then you’ll haveto lean across me to punch it in.”
