“Power.”
“They have power;they’re demons.”
“Not enough. Theywant the whole world to know and fear them. They plan to havehumans, hunters, and vampires cowering before them. They’ll make usall pay for pushing them back into Hell before.”
“We didn’t dothat.”
“It doesn’tmatter.”
“Do you think thedemons will kill us all?” she asked incredulously.
“No, I believethey’ll enslave us all.”
“That’sworse.”
“It is. The demonswon’t stand for anything less than total obedience from all of us.If you don’t bend to their will, they’ll make you… or they’ll killyou.”
“I won’t become aSavage.”
“Then you’lldie.”
He said it flatly, but inwardly, he raged against such a fate for her. He may notbelieve most humans or vamps deserved better than the fate thedemons would hand them, but she did.
And so did thechildren of this earth. They may grow up to be annoying adults, butnow they were a wealth of innocence and love that he wouldn’t allowanyone to destroy.
CHAPTER 44
Unsure of what tosay, Caro finished her blood and rose. She returned to the kitchenand rinsed her mug before sticking it in the dishwasher. Out of thetwo options, she’d prefer to die than become a Savage, but neithersounded good to her.
Life was a lotshittier without her parents and their love, but she loved thiscruel, unforgiving, beautiful world and all the wonders it offered. She planned to experience more of it… and not as a monster.
She felt Saber’sstare on her before she spotted his reflection in the window overthe sink. He stood in the doorway to the dining room with his armscrossed over his chest as he leaned against the frame. It wasunfair that he always looked good enough to lick… and so many otherdeliciously naughty things.
As Caro remainedstaring at him in the window, Saber openly admired how her jeanshugged her ass. His hands itched to cup that ass as he guided herwhile she rode him with abandon.
He should leavehere, go upstairs, and try to get some sleep, but she would onlyhaunt him there. She haunted him everywhere he went. She was worsethan the ghosts of Christmas Past, Present, and Future.
Beneath the fire, metal, and sweat aroma clinging to her, he detected the ocean andfresh air odor she exuded. He would have believed it impossible forsea and fire to mix so well, but they combined into a nearlyirresistible scent.
He should walkaway from her and leave her be. She aroused emotions best leftburied, but that scent was a lure, pulling him in and making itimpossible to resist her.
She rattled him,but he’d never been one to deny himself a woman, and she would beone of the greatest pleasures in life. He was sure of it.
His erection madeevery step he took toward her more difficult, but he continuedtaking those steps until he stood directly behind her. In theglass, her eyes were vibrant as she watched him like he was thetiger coming in for the kill.
And he felt likethat tiger as every muscle in his body tensed to spring. Hewouldn’t let her get away from him.
Casting aside twohundred years of working to keep his emotions under control, hefelt the wall he’d kept carefully constructed around himselfcrumbling as he rested a hand on her hip.
If he let himselfgo, the bodies would start to pile up, and he had no doubt some ofthose bodies would be innocents, but he couldn’t stop himself fromcaressing her hip. When her breath caught and she nibbled on herbottom lip in the most enticing of ways, he lost himself a littlemore to her and the excitement thundering through his veins.
Caro gasped whenSaber used his hand to guide her back a step. This was a very, verybad idea, but though her brain screamed at her to stop, her body was little more than putty in his large, powerfulhands.
Unrelenting fleshpressed against her back as he stepped closer. In the window, hiseyes held hers as he moved his head down until his lips nearlytouched her ear. He was giving her time to say no, push him away, and run as sheshould, and her dumb ass remained exactlywhere it was.
Her eyes halfclosed as his warm breath brushed her ear and he gripped her hipmore firmly. It had been a year since someone touched her likethis, and no one had ever made her body come alive with such asimple touch. Sheyearnedfor more of it.
When she returnedto her family, she’d settled into a pattern of mostly staying home. She sometimes went out to the local bars but didn’t go home withany guys from there.
