She was home, theywould be safe, and it took everything she had not to sob out herjoy over it.

Looking up at thesky as she navigated the familiar drive, she smiled at the starstwinkling in the black sky. Little more than a sliver of moon hungabove them.

She’d never beenso glad to appreciate the beauty of their world; she hadn’tbelieved she’d ever get the chance to admire the sky again while inthe storm drain. She drank in its beauty as her grip eased on thewheel.

But as Carorejoiced in being here to enjoy life, a sense of dread returned asshe recalled that thing beneath the earth.

CHAPTER 64

“The demons andSavages will destroy the world,” she said.

Saber tapped afinger against the blade on his lap. “Not if we destroy them first. And we have an advantage; they don’t know we have all the stones, andyou, to forge weapons. I also suspect that if we canfind whoever belongs to each of those stones, they’ll be alotmore powerful against the demons.”

“Why do you saythat?”

He recalled theflash of light that went through the stones when Brie set them outon the table next to each other. The stones possessed a lot ofpower, and like the Alliance of vampires and hunters Ronan andNathan had forged, they were all stronger together.

“Strength innumbers,” he said, which was the best explanation he could give, considering he had no idea if his suspicion was true or not.

“Hmm.”

“Our ancestorsdrove them back somehow, and I doubt it was by simply being able tokill them easier with the swords. They do something together.”

Caro hoped he wasright. What she’d seen him do with the sword was extremelyimpressive, but she didn’t think it was enough to propel thosemonsters back into Hell, where they should be.

“And if the stonebelongs to someone and they claim it, then the demons can’t take itfrom them,” Saber continued.

“But if someonedoesn’t claim a stone, then a demon can take it?”

“Yes. They wereoriginally demon possessions. I’m not sure if, like us, there isonly one demon for each stone or if they canalluse them, but I know we need to find the possessors of those other stones andsecure our hold on them.”

“Has anyone elsetried to touch them?”

“Not that I knowof, but I’ve been with you for the past two weeks. A lot could havechanged since then. When I was leaving, they were going to see ifsome of the other stones belonged to someone, but I didn’t stickaround to find out the answer.”

“You haven’ttalked to your friends?”

“They’re not myfriends,” he replied. “We work together;thatis ourrelationship.”

It sounded like asad, lonely existence to her. His life revolved around hunting andkilling with these other vampires and hunters, but he didn’tconsider them friends? They were simply cohorts in murder?

That had to leadto a rather miserable existence. She couldn’t imagine living such abrutal life with vamps who felt little to no emotions aboutthings.

No wonder Saberwas so messed up. Or was it just him?

Do the othersfeel the same way about each other? As she pondered this, shedecided they probably didn’t. Having to rely on others to stayalive would forge bonds, even if they loved killing.

She suspected onlySaber kept his relationship with the Alliance so cold and distant.Which only made it sadder.

She ached for him,but these were his life choices.Hewas the only one who hadto live with the consequences, and there was nothing she could doabout it.

“And no,” Sabercontinued, “I haven’t talked to them other than to send a textletting Ronan know I’d arrived and was having my sword made.”

“What did hesay?”

“What is there tosay?”

“Don’t you thinkyou should tell them what happened tonight?”
