If something wentwrong or her partner got too attached, it could all go horriblywrong. She and her family relied on flying under the radar toremain here peacefully, so she was alwaysverycareful aboutwhat she did when she was out.
Sometimes, shewould travel to Portland since it was a much bigger place, butshe’d still only hooked up with one guy while there. And that was alackluster experience at best.
She’d come to relyon her favorite vibrator and fingers to get her through, but shehadn’t realized how much she missed the touch of another. No,notanother…him.
It took everythingshe had not to tremble when his fingers stroked her hip and belly. He barely touched her, and she was already wet and aching forhim.
When he rested hislips against her ear and inhaled deeply, she nearly moaned as herbody reacted to his. The man did magical things to her with solittle effort; what could he do with a whole lot more? Her heartraced to find out while her brain screamed at her to run before hedevoured her.
Saber never tookhis eyes from her as his hand moved toward the button of her jeans. When he slid it free, her gaze darted to the doorway. If she boltednow, his predatory instincts to chase down his prey would kick in,but he would let her go. He had to.
He kept tellinghimself this, but his body tensed as he braced to take her down. He’d never forced himself on a woman and wasn’t about to start withCaro, but his predator instincts were on high alert.
When his hand slidbeneath her shirt, Caro remained frozen, but the second his palmsettled against her flesh, she sucked in a breath, and her bodywent rigid beneath his touch. Saber’s eyes closed as the feel ofher skin burned into his palm.
Everything abouther felt right and familiar; it was as if they’d known each otherfor years. The sensation of her body against his was oddly familiaryet still so new and exciting.
Caro couldn’tbreathe as Saber’s thumb rubbed her skin. Her brain continued toscream for her to run, but her body relaxed into him, and sherelished the sensations his touch evoked. She hadn’t known anythingcould feel this good and right; his arms around her were likecoming home.
His fingerscaressed her belly before circling her belly button. His pulseraced, and his fangs throbbed as he resisted sinking them into herthroat so he could feast on her blood while fucking her.
But as his bodyclamored for more, madness seeped across his mind. His emotionsturned and twisted into something uncontrollable as they sought tobreak free. She did things to him, unraveled him in ways hecouldn’t allow, and touched something deep inside him.
She did things hecouldn’t allow, brought forth emotions he buried centuries ago andintended to keep locked away. He wanted to care for her, to holdher, and know her better, but it was impossible.
Caring for anyonewas a sure way to push him over the edge.
Even as heralluring body made him want more, his mind recoiled, and his handslid away from her. When he stepped back, he caught his red eyes inthe glass and sneered.
What was hethinking, allowing himself to get like this? And aroundher? He knew better.
Saber abruptlyreleased her and stormed toward the doorway. “I can’t do this.”
Caro’s weakenedknees stiffened; she grasped the sink to keep from falling. Afterhaving his heat against her, the rush of air on her back was coldand unwelcome.
Still reeling overhis abrupt rejection, Caro watched as he vanished into the diningroom. A second later, the front door opened and slammed shut.
She had no ideawhat just happened, but her body continued to clamor for more asrage churned in her gut. She hadn’t initiatedanyof this.Hewas the one who started it!
He came to her.Yes, she wanted him, but she certainly wasn’t going to make thefirst move. And then he walked away as if he hadn’t set her body onfire and left it smoldering in misery.
She’d never wantedto kill someone as badly as she did Saber. If he’d been standingnear her, she would have grabbed a knife from the butcher block inthe corner and plunged it into his cold, manipulative, twistedheart.
Was this all somegame to him?
She clamped herteeth against her overwhelming impulse to scream and kick thecabinets. She would not give him the satisfaction of doing such anundignified thing.
Pushing herselfaway from the sink, she held her chin high in case he was somewherewatching her. She walked over to the back door, opened it, andstrode outside.
The cool airagainst her overheated skin was a welcome relief, but it didnothing to chill the fury burning through her. She had no idea whatshe wanted to do—run, scream, put an end to the lust still burningin her body, or hunt down the prick and beat the shit out ofhim.
Since screamingwould alert him to how pissed off and frustrated she was, shedecided against it. She debated returning to her apartment andbreaking out her trusty vibrator, but the simple release wasn’tgood enough.
She wantedhim.
That knowledgeonly made her madder. Oh yes, she would stab him and do it withhissword.
She finallydecided on a path to take. If she had to beat the crap out ofsomething, it might as well be steel. She didn’t bother looking tosee if he was around as she returned to her shop with her head heldhigh.
