Caro’s hand flewto her mouth at this revelation. “No, they’re not.”

“I’m not lying toyou. I’m many things, and most of them aren’t good, but I’mnota liar. They are injecting others with that poison anddestroying them with it. I’ve seen the devastation the injectionsleave in their wake. I can introduce you to some of the injected ifyou’d like, but don’t get too close to their glass cages, orthey’ll try to tear you apart.”

Nausea churned inCaro’s stomach as his words created a horrifying picture in hermind, one she couldn’t get rid of as it embedded itself in herbrain. She wanted nothing to do with any of this.

She’d giveanything to return to the simple, love-filled, oblivious life shelived two short weeks ago. How had everything changedsomuch in such a short time?

But there was nogoing back. This violent and blood-filled reality had become herlife, and these bastards had killed her parents.

Rage and sorrowreplaced her revulsion as she gazed at the ashes littering thefloor. She was tired of the pendulum her feelings had ridden sincelearning of her parents’ deaths.

She lowered herhead into her hand as she contemplated his words. She could helpwith this, but did she trust him enough to say so? No.

Saber stared ather while he waited for her to admit what he already knew.Shehad crafted some of those swords on the wall. Her work, while not the same as what created his knife, was as exquisite asher father’s.

He’d seen thedifferences in the swords on the wall. They were small, but therewas something more artistic and feminine about hers. It was such asubtle difference that most wouldn’t notice unless they lookedclosely, and few would take the time to do so.

However, thatdidn’t mean her father had taught her how to merge a Damascussteel-type blade with whatever else Charles did to give his weaponsa strength unlike any Saber ever encountered before. They neededthatto destroy the demons.

But her swordswould hold up well enough against them. She was still a bettermetal worker than any he’d ever encountered… outside of her father.Even if he never taught her his technique, she could still proveuseful.

The Savages hadeither looked closely at the swords or decided her father wouldhave passed on his knowledge to his child. No matter what they didto him, Charles never would have given up info on his daughter.

But the Savagesand demons were after her and would stop at nothing to get her. Hehad to keep her safe because he needed her talents too.

He hoped she wouldadmit what he already knew and volunteer to help. He’d force herinto it, if necessary, but she’d been through enough without thathappening.

That was a problemfor later. Now, they had to get out of here.

CHAPTER 23

“Where are yougoing?” Caro demanded when Saber turned and walked toward theswinging door. She followed him to the front of the store.

“We have to getout of here before their friends outside call for backup, whichthey probably already have. Not many of them can go out in the sun,but there’s enough to make this situation worse.

“And if we’restill in this town when night falls, more Savages will descend onit, and we’ll be screwed. The ones outside aren’t stupid; they sentthese two in to test the waters. I’m sure they saw me enter, butthey have no idea who I am.

“When these twodon’t reappear with you becauseyou’rewho they’re after, they’re going to hide and wait until their cronies can come to helpthem capture you. We can’t be here when that happens.”

If they got theirhands on him and learned who he truly was, what he did to theSavage in the back would look like fun by the time the demonsfinished with him.

“Why don’t weleave?” Caro asked. “My van is parked behind the store.”

She’d prefer notto take this man with her when she left, but she would if it meantgetting out of here alive andnotsome freaky injectedmonster.

“We’re not takingyour van. They’ll already know the vehicle, have the license plate, and follow it out of here. They’ll use the GPS to track you if theylose you. They didn’t know where you were before, but they’ll findyou if you leave in that vehicle.”

“My dad disabledthe GPS in our vehicles as soon as they left the lot, and none ofthem are registered to our real address. He made sure no one couldtrack them.”

“Charles wasalways a smart man, but that van still isn’t going anywhere. Oncethey know it, they’ll find it.”

Caro sighed infrustration. “Then where’s your car?”

“We’re not takingit either.”

“Why not?”

“Because ifthey’re up front, which at least some of them are, they’ll see usget into it and follow.”
