“Look, all I am saying is not to let this job take you faster than you need to go. The bosses will concede to you because of your name. They want to be in good graces with your father and I,but don’t let them set you up to be the test dummy, Dmitri. The Walker name comes with a lot of pressure, but you are too strong to let that pressure get to you.”
“With all due respect, Unc, nobody gave me shit. I worked hard to be where I am now. The Walker name may get me through doors, but my résumé will always speak for itself.”
“I know, youngsta. I watched you grow into the man you are. Don’t take this conversation as me not believing in you, because I do. I know you can do whatever you set your mind to, and it’s not because you are my nephew or your father’s son. I just want you to be safe, kid.”
“You can’t protect me forever, Unc. Just trust me enough to believe me when I say I can do this.”
“Alright. I’m going to take your word for it, but if I feel like you’re in too deep, I’ll pull you out. You can be mad at me if you want, but I won’t lose you to this city or anything else.”
“Deal.”
My uncle dapped me up and pulled me into a hug. He gripped my head to his like I was still the little ass boy he saw me as, but I didn’t complain. Sometimes I wished my own father would treat me the way my uncle did, naturally, but I was done searching for a love I would never get.
“Let’s go and hear what this nigga Fitz got to say. I don’t trust him, Dmitri, so that means you can’t trust his ass either.”
“He did get me put on this assignment when you told me no.”
“Exactly why I don’t trust his ass.”
I chuckled before walking out of my uncle’s office with him close behind. Everyone else had now made it in and was getting settled in the boardroom. When we walked in, Agent Fitz, who was set to be my handler during this investigation, queued up his presentation. My uncle sat at the head of the table where I was sure he would be looking for any flaw he could find in this operation. I took a seat in the middle and opened my notepad. Iwanted to jot down thoughts as they came so when it was time for me to brief, I could hit all the points I wanted to make.
“You guys can grab a copy of the slide deck on the way to your seats,” Fitz instructed as everyone made their way in.
It didn’t take long for him to have the presentation up on the big screen. Everyone grabbed a copy of the slide deck as they were told and hurried to their seats. Once we were all seated, he went right into telling us the only thing I came here to hear.
“Operation Eradicate. That is what I’m calling this mission. I’ll be sending a single agent, Agent Walker, undercover as a mechanic for the notorious Durty Boyz Gang. The Durty Boyz is run by none other than Bishop Moore. If you don’t know who Bishop Moore is, leave this room now. You don’t deserve to be here.”
No one left, so Fitz continued.
“I know they call themselves a motorcycle club that serves this city and its citizens, but make no mistake: This is a gang. The Durty Boyz are not only the cause of most of the gun violence in this city, but they are also trafficking everything from drugs to women. We cannot let this go on any longer than it already has.”
The room was attentive as Fitz continued his brief. I could tell my uncle Atlas didn’t want to be intrigued, but he was. The plan was a good one, and once I added my insight, it would be hard to deny that we had this thing under control.
“Now, I’m going to sit and let Agent Walker tell you exactly how he plans to execute this mission and bring Bishop Moore and all those who follow him to justice.”
I got up from my seat and rolled into my brief effortlessly. I walked around the room with confidence as I described the details of my plan and how quickly I planned to get this done. In less than six weeks, I would infiltrate the Durty Boyz and bring them down from the inside out. Infiltrating one of themost notorious biker gangs in the city and bringing them down was never on my to-do list, but when I heard the success of this mission would give me the option to pick my next field office, I had to jump at this opportunity. Now, the only thing left for me to do was to bring this thing to a close. It wouldn’t take me long to do it at all. I was more than ready.
“Raymond McAfee, better known as Drill. At least that’s what your buddies in the Durty Boyz gang call you, right?”
Raymond didn’t answer. He sat facing the mirrored glass that allowed my superiors to look in on us. On the other side of the glass was my uncle Atlas and Agent Fitz. On this side, it was just us, and I planned to walk out victoriously.
The smell of alcohol seeped from his pores and permeated the entire interrogation room. If I had to guess, he’d been drinking all night. He would have plenty of time to sober up when I sent him back to his cell. He wouldn’t be going home any time soon.
I stood by the door with my arms folded, one over the other, a manila folder
tucked into my side. This room was my playground. I’d gone for hours in here with criminals a lot smarter than Drill, and, eventually, I always got the answers I wanted.
I slammed the manila folder down in front of him. It was everything I had collected on the dirty business he had his hands in. This folder would be the key to getting one step closer to Bishop Moore, and Drill was going to help me get there.
“That’s a life sentence in that folder right there.”
“You ain’t got shit on me.”
Drill’s cocky ass leaned back in his seat like he didn’t have a care in the world. He crossed his legs and let out a low chuckle. I couldn’t wait to wipe that smile from his face.
“You don’t think so?”
I picked the folder up and opened it. I took one file out at a time and placed it in front of him. I watched his eyes focus and then widen.
