I put the phone down, knowing damn well they’ll keep this nonsense going all day.
They’re stubborn like that. Normally, I don’t mind, but I’m generally not the center of attention or interrogation. I reply with a quick middle finger emoji before I quickly brush my teeth and get ready for work. Normally, I don’t bother with my hair; the curls do what they want. Today, I work a bit of pomade throughout. Attempting to give them some kind of structure. Taming them as best I can. I pull on a pair of light wash Wranglers, tucking my tan polyester uniform shirt into the waistband. Slipping a leather belt around my waist, I secure my handgun in its holster, then shoulder my vest. Everything else I carry on duty is strapped to the vest. Handcuffs, taser, extra magazines, all of it gets stored on the vest itself. It’s a bad habit, but I don’t wear it unless I’m on a call or running traffic, keeping it stowed in my vehicle when I’m on shift.
