“He did apologize,” I said.

“I also intervened. When my men discovered Hugo Corvo attacking your brother.”

I gasped and swayed. Everett grabbed my arm.

“I believe Corvo intended to kill your brother. It appears your brother owes a great deal more to the man holding Corvo’s strings than he does to me. My men got your brother to you.”

I pressed my lips together, wanting to complain that they’d thrown Chance out of a moving car, but if what he was saying was true, he might have saved my brother’s life. I grabbed Everett’s hand and held on tight.

“I also wanted to come here to give you a warning,” Fowler continued.

Both Everett and I stiffened. Caden and Gunnar both took a step closer.

“Corvo isnotgiving up. He’ll come for your brother again, and if he can’t get to Chance, he’s coming for you, Ms. Ellis.”

Chapter 35

Everett

“Iwant him found and stopped.”

Spinning, I put my hands on my hips and glared at everyone in the security room. We’d come here after Fowler had cornered Piper in the lobby. When I heard he was talking to her…

She was now sitting in a chair by one of the computers, chewing on her lip.

But knowing Corvo still had her in his sights made me want to tear the town apart to find him.

Caden held a hand up. “We all want Corvo found.”

“Unfortunately, he’s the kind of scum who’s good at avoiding detection,” Enzo said.

“What if Corvo goes to the hospital?” Piper said.

Caden shook his head. “I called Sanchez. The police have an officer assigned to his room.”

“None of this mess is on Piper and she’s the one dealing with the consequences.” I glanced back at her. “I want her free, I want her safe.”

The look on her damn face. She was looking at me like I was her white knight. She rose and crossed to me.

Then, in front of everyone, she went up on her toes and kissed me. “It’s going to be okay.”

I wrapped an arm around her.

“Because I have you, and everyone. I’m not alone.”

The air shuddered out of me. “No, you’re not.”

“I have news.”

With a jolt, I looked up. Alessio was standing next to his cousin. I hadn’t seen or heard him walk in, and from the scowl on Caden’s face, nor had he. I hadn’t even realized he was still in Windward.

“It’s done,” Alessio said.

“What’s done?” I asked.

“I’ve been in contact with Bastian and Nash. Bastian had a sit down with Elias Rocha last night.”

I felt Piper tense, and my own neck muscles went tight.
