Cole had never seen him look like that, even when they were on the run. He whined, unsure of what to do.
Do I shift?
Run?
The temptation to flee the scene and get as far away from this mess as possible danced at the edge of his mind.
Fight or flight?
Maybe I’m not so brave after all.
Aaron trotted over to him, nudged Cole’s shoulder with his nose, calming him a little.
“Are you insane?” Smith hissed. “You’re supposed to be on the outskirts, out of sight, not right in the middle of our run.”
“I know.” Logan swallowed, gaze darting to Cole, then Aaron, then back to Smith.
“We all know he’s not a fucking flight risk. Paul’s only making you run here to mess with you. How’re you going to explain this?” Smith glanced back over his shoulder towards the trees.
Someone was coming.
More than one.
The sound was faint but there was no mistaking it.
“Fuck.”
Logan picked himself up off the ground, dusting twigs and leaves from his skin. “It’s my fault. Nothing to do with Aaron.”
Aaron growled, but Logan shot him a pointed glare.
Smith sighed. “I know it’s your fucking fault, you possessive arsehole.”
Logan’s mouth fell open but no words came out.
Oh shit.
Smithknows.
Cole started to shift back, but Smith whirled to face him. “No. Stay as a wolf.”
Instinct told Cole to trust him, he couldn’t explain why, but he let the shift go, huffing out a breath.
“What are you going to do?” Logan walked towards Smith, stance open but wary. “We’re fucked if you tell Paul.”
“I’m aware.” He cocked his head to the side, then lowered his voice. “You hear that?”
“Yeah. They’ll be here any second.”
Smith flexed his fingers and rolled his shoulders. “I’m Jacob’s contact in the HRU.”
“What?” Logan’s eyes widened. “You pulled his fucking fangs out in that interrogation!”
“One.”Smith hissed. “To get you to hurry the fuck up, or Rich would’ve happily pulled out all of them. Now shut up and follow my lead.”
As four wolves crashed through the trees to join them, Smith took a step towards Logan and shoved him backwards. “What the fuck, man?” He shoved him again. “That was my fox. Me and Cole have been chasing it for the last ten minutes.”
“Fuck off, we had it first.” Logan shoved him back. “You weren’t anywhere near here when we picked up its scent.”
