Simon stayed perfectly still, studying him, before finally taking a step towards him. “I hope for your sake that’s the truth.” He sighed, as though this whole process was a huge pain in the arse for him. “The fact remains that you tried to escape, Cole, and for that, you’ll be punished. Whether you join our pack or not.” Hooking a thumb over his shoulder, he added, “They’ll be asking you the questions in full interrogation mode. You’ll answer because you have to, but they’re going to punish you either way.”
“Nice.” Cole rolled his eyes in one last show of defiance, but his voice shook a little. No acting required now.
Simon smiled as he stepped back. “It will be. Just not for you.” He sighed, sounding wistful. “I just wish I could stay to watch.”
Turning to address the others, Simon said, “I want you to treat this as a full HRU traitor interrogation, use whatever methods you deem necessary. Assume everything he tells you is a lie. Just don’t kill him.”
With that parting comment, Simon left, silence echoing around the room as the door clicked shut.
“Right, then.” The guy on the left—dark hair, blue eyes, thick stubble, arms like tree trunks—clicked his neck from side to side. “Let’s get started.”
Cole swallowed, mouth dry, as he watched the three of them walk towards him.
Oh fuck.
