Paul grinned. “Weare going to go have a little chat with them on Friday night. Strictly routine. It’ll be good experience for you.”
“So just talk to them then?”
“As long as they aren’t hiding anything.”
Cole didn’t want to ask what would happen if they were. Smith had said they knew Paul’s team was coming, so they should be prepared, right? Nothing would happen.
It was a small comfort, but it was something.
Because this was it.
The moment he knew would eventually come, but it was happening way sooner than he’d expected. Cold trickled down his spine as a heavy weight settled in his stomach.
A little over a month ago he was human, adamant he’d never ever be a part of something like this. And now he was going to intimidate what used to be his own people as a member of the Human Reconnaissance Unit.
Just the thought of it made him feel sick.

Jacob escortedLogan and Aaron outside to their car. “I’ll meet you back at your flat.”
They watched him drive off, and Logan threw his keys to Aaron. “Nothing like a bit of torture in the morning to make you feel like shit.”
Instead of going to the driver’s side, Aaron stepped in close and put his hands on Logan’s shoulders. He glanced around them, but no one was in earshot. “Are you sure you’re all right? I know that must’ve triggered some fucking awful memories for you.”
It had.
But at least this time he hadn’t lost any teeth.
He leant his forehead against Aaron’s, breathing in his familiar scent.
Pack.
Family.
In an ideal world, it should feel the same with every member of his pack, but Logan couldn’t imagine ever feeling that way about Paul.
“I’m fine,” he answered after a moment. And he was.
But what about Cole?
Leaving him with Paul had been... difficult. All Logan wanted was to hold him and lose himself in Cole’s scent. Now that Paul was actively including him in HRU activities, their time together would get less and less. It wouldn’t surprise Logan if Paul tried to get rid of them altogether.
He and Aaron weren’t HRU, nowhere close. And escorting Cole had been a punishment, not something a member of Jacob’s team would normally be tasked with. They’d been doing it for just over a month now. Paul could argue it was enough time, that his team would be better suited to escort Cole.
The mere thought of it made his wolf unsettled. He could only imagine how bad it would feel if...whenit actually happened.
Smith would be Jacob’s contact then. Logan would have no access to Cole.
None.
He shuddered, and maybe reading his mind, Aaron gripped his shoulder. “He’ll be all right, too. Paul wouldn’t be taking him out on a mission if he didn’t trust him to some extent.”
Logan’s head snapped up. “When?”
“Friday night.”
“Fuck.” He’d known it would be soon, but not that soon.
