“What about me?” Being Cole’s sparring partner was one thing, Logan had no desire to be on either end of a weapon. He glanced at Aaron who looked equally concerned.
Paul grinned at him, the cold smile Logan was used to seeing. “You two can sit these sessions out. But don’t worry, Logan, you’ll be involved again soon enough.”
Paul led Cole over to the weights area, so Logan and Aaron took a seat on one of the benches skirting the room. “Arsehole,” he hissed, watching Paul as he showed Cole the different machines.
“Yep.” Aaron leant back against the wood and sighed. “You know what he’s going to make you do, don’t you? Or rather, make Cole do.”
Logan tugged at his hair, a sign of frustration that he seemed to be doing more and more these days. “Yeah.” There was one main area of training left to cover. That Logan was aware of anyway. “Can’t wait for that.”
* * *
Weapons training was probablyCole’s strongest area so far. Logan had read all about Cole’s qualifications when he’d had him as a candidate, but it was something else to see it in person. He might’ve protested otherwise, but Cole was a natural.
Even Paul looked impressed.
They hadn’t been privy to the gun range training, but judging from the look on Paul’s face and the impressed side-eyes the rest of the team gave him, Cole had excelled.
Cole joined them a few hours later, a small smile replacing his usual pissed-off expression. “I’m done for the day. You want to go get food?”
“Yes.” Aaron was already on his feet. “I’m fucking starving.”
So was Logan.
He was also bored to tears from having to sit for hours on end doing nothing. They couldn’t watch Cole shoot guns, but they weren’t allowed to leave the training facility either.
Please don’t let this happen every day.
“How did it go in there?” He nodded to the double doors at the far end of the room. The ones that led to the shooting range.
“Good, I think.” He didn’t offer up anything else, and Logan didn’t push. Whatever Cole’s thoughts were on weapons training, it probably wasn’t wise to discuss that where anyone could overhear them.
Much to Logan and Aaron’s dismay, weapons training continued that day and the day after that. Paul had them practising every day up to the full moon. By the time the moon was at its fullest, Logan was practically vibrating with the need to run.
He closed his book as Cole walked over to them. It was his third in over a week.
“Hey.” Cole took a seat next to him. “You’ll be pleased to know we’re done with weapons training. Paul says we’re starting something new the day after tomorrow.”
Logan shared a look with Aaron but didn’t say anything. Cole didn’t need to know about that just yet if he hadn’t worked it out already. “Thank fuck for that. I’m running out of books.”
Cole’s knee bounced, his hands bunching into fists, then uncurling in quick succession. Despite everything, Logan grinned and nudged him. “Excited about tonight?”
“Are you kidding?” Cole stared at him like he was insane. “I get to leave the flat and run over the whole estate. I am way beyond excited.”
Logan vividly remembered the last full moon, Cole’s first. At the time he’d thought it would be the last one they ever spent together. It had been wonderful but bittersweet. Tonight’s would be nothing like the one they’d spent in Cornwall. No running along the beach, no calm blue sea to swim naked in.
No sex.
That might be the hardest thing of all.
In his wolf form, instinct took over to some extent.
His instincts told him Cole was his, he was Cole’s. They were together. Something they both had to work hard to hide in human form. How hard would it be as wolves with the pull of the moon at full strength?
How could he warn Cole they needed to be extra vigilant? Other members of their pack would be out there tonight. A lot of Paul’s team, for sure, but other pack members often chose to come to the McKillan Estate for the full-moon run.
It was safe.
And there was enough space not to step on each other’s toes.
