Chapter 15
Life imprisonment.
Logan couldn’t get his head around it.
This afternoon he’d been worried about not being able to see Cole as much, and now? Now he’d be lucky if he ever saw him again after this. “Maybe Jacob can help?” Even as he said the words, he knew there was nothing Jacob could do.
“No.” Aaron shook his head, nodding in the direction of Michael and Baker. And Logan swore silently. “He can’t do anything for us now.”
Nick looked up, a spark ofsomethingin his eyes. “Maybesomebodycan.”
Logan scowled and gestured to the front of the van like Aaron had done, then touched his ear.
They might hear us.
Cole had suggested the front was soundproofed, and it probably was, but Logan wouldn’t risk dragging Jacob into this mess.
Nick nodded and sat back in his seat.
* * *
The moodin the van was a resigned kind of acceptance. Logan had known this could happen, they all had, but he’d started to believe they’d got past the worst. That what they were trying to do was working.
He squeezed Cole’s fingers, wishing they’d had more time. There was so much he wanted to tell him, showhim, and now he’d probably never get the chance.
Aaron nudged him with his knee. “Hey,” he murmured. “We’re not headed towards the prison.”
“What?” Logan hadn’t been paying much attention to their journey, too focused on Cole beside him. “How do you know?”
“It’s a straight road for ten, maybe fifteen minutes from McKillan House, and then you hit traffic lights and turn right. We’ve been driving for about twenty-five minutes and we haven’t turned. Wherever we’re headed, it’s not the prison.”
Where the fuck was Michael taking them?
He slid closer to Aaron, turning to whisper in his ear. “This could be fucking bad.”
“Yeah.”
Ice trickled down his spine, fear speeding his pulse. Logan glanced around everyone in the van. Without their handcuffs, they could probably beat Michael and Baker if it came to a fight. Alpha power notwithstanding, there were five of them. And Nick wasn’t part of Michael’s pack, he’d have a lot less trouble ignoring Michael’s orders.
But the iron-silver cuffs sapped their energy and there was no getting out of them without the key. Which Michael had.
“If they want us out of the van, they’ll have to uncuff us. Maybe that’s our chance?”
Aaron raised his eyebrows. “To do what? Die? Because they’ll do it one at a time and I don’t think they’ll just leave us standing around while they do the others.”
Logan banged his head against the side of the van. “I don’t know what else to suggest.” He pulled at the shackles, wincing as the metal dug in. “We’re fucking useless with these—”
The van skidded to a halt, sliding them into one another, and then the engine turned off.
“We here?” Cole asked, face suddenly pale.
Aaron shook his head. “I don’t think we’re at the prison.”
“Then where—”
The door slid open and Michael stood there with Baker beside him. Logan recognised his and Aaron’s duffle bags at their feet, along with a couple of others.
Silence.
