“He will be within his rights to kill them, it's our most ancient law.” Oz finally said. Leaning across he pushed the hair behind Laura's ear. She beamed up at him. “Mates are off limits. We do not as shifters prey on those weaker than ourselves but most of all mates and children. Ash will want to kill every single one of them.” He finally met my eyes. “But I doubt Ace and the others will let him. He won’t like that much but maybe -”
I cut him off. “Mates? What is it? I’ve heard you call Laura mate and Ash-” I stuttered. “He's called me it as well. But I don't understand. I thought mate meant friend.”
Laura chuckled. “Soul mates Lainey, or fated mates as they see it. The one person in the universe that is meant for you.”
“Like someone you really fancy?”
Oz laughed. “Yes that and so much more, it means forever. Two souls entwined forever. Rejecting your fated mate can kill the rejected party. I've seen it happen and it's not pretty.” His eyes met mine.
“Ash thinks I'm his soul mate?”
“Ash knows you are his soul mate,” Laura whispered. “There's no guessing with these guys. They just know.”
“You knew as well,” Oz reminded her. “That's why you sank teeth into me.”
“You- bit-” I waved my words away. “Doesn't matter. I guess but me and Ash have spent one night together.”
“And yet you can't stop thinking about him can you?” Laura asked softly.
Blushing, I covered my face with my hands. “I don't know what is wrong with me.”
“You feel the bond between the two of you. For you, it's scary and new and unexpected but for him,” Oz shrugged. “For Ash, there is no doubt and he will spend his life making you happy.” Cocking his head to the side, he listened, narrowing his eyes. “But he can tell you that himself. He’s just arrived.”
“No.” jumping up I scrambled over the back of the sofa, my eyes wild on the large window in front of us like I expected Ash to smash through it in his dragon form.
“Lainey.” Laura kept her voice even.
“He's not going to hurt you, Lainey. He couldn't.” Oz stood there. His hands were on his hips and his expression cold.
“I know.” And I did know that. “But I don't want to see him, please Oz.” The tears were falling down my face again. “Please tell him to go away.”
“Please don't hurt my friend Lainey.”
“I don't want to. But I can't see him not yet.” I begged him. “Please Oz. I can't see him. I need some more time. I need to think.”
