“A monster.” I swallowed hard. “And I- we did - things. God.” I sucked in a breath. “You gave me your blood, does that mean I'm going to turn into what you are?”

Ash reached for me and I slapped away his hand

“Don't touch me. Don't ever touch me again. I feel sick.” To put weight behind my words, I bent and vomited on the snow. Dry heaving retching that lanced my body with pain.

“Lainey please.”

“No.” Turning towards his commanding officer I pleaded. “Please can I go somewhere away from him? I want to go home. I want-”

“Ash can take you home, Lainey,” Ace said softly.

Shaking my head wildly I started crying. It was all too much everything that had happened from the moment I had been taken was finally catching up with me. I felt wired and so far away all at the same time. Fat rolling tears cooled and froze on my face as they fell.

“Please, I just want to go home.”

Ace shot a look at Ash, who nodded. There was so much pain on his face but I couldn't let it get to me. I couldn't and I wouldn't.

“Oz will take you back down, and home.” Ace signalled behind him and a fresh pair of black booted feet appeared in front of me.

“Come on Lainey, love.” Strong hands heaved me under my armpits. “Let's get you home. I'll get Laura on the way as well. A friendly face will help you process.” There was a pause. “I will take good care of her for you brother.”

I didn't need to turn to know he was talking to Ash. I didn't want to look at him.

I just wanted to go home.
