It had already been decided that I would go with her, to care for her. It was the least I could do seeing as I had caused all of this. Honestly, I just wanted to be away from the Savage Sons, or more specifically, away from Cyber’s piercing eyes. He had been watching me like a hawk ever since we had left the hospital. Even going so far as to roar behind us on his monster of a bike.
I was surprised he even let me shower in peace.
I had been half expecting him to be there when I stepped out.
Pausing at the bottom of the stairs, I listened to the loud, heated conversation coming from the kitchen.
“No.” Darcie's voice was strident.
There was a loud sigh but I couldn't tell whether it came from Havoc or Cyber. Not without stepping into view, and I didn’t want to do that. I wanted to listen for a while. I was good at listening.
“She is not going to stay at the clubhouse, no way.”
“It's the safest place for her,” Cyber mumbled, and I had to strain to hear. “Where we can keep an eye on her.”
“I can keep an eye on her here. Don't think she has been through enough, Cyber? You really think she would cope there? Surrounded by you lot?”
“None of them will touch her. They aren't rapists.”
“I know you aren't a rapist, Cyber.” Darcie’s voice dripped with disdain.
She reminded me of me in so many ways. The old me anyway. Back when my parents were alive and my dad would give me a playful clip around the head for back chatting my mother.
“But a place full of men isn't the place for her right now. It might never be. She jumps at fucking shadows for God’s sake. Listening to a bunch of unruly bikers having sex on the sofas is not going to do her any good.”
“Or desks,” Havoc chuckled.
“That isn't helping, Havoc.”
There was obviously a story there. A private one if the fondness in their voices was anything to go by.
“What I am saying...”
Cyber’s voice rose to an almost shout. “She will be safe, Darcie, you have my word.”
“Lower your voice, brother.” Havoc sounded angry even if his voice was quiet and smooth.
“Your word doesn't mean shit right now, Cyber,” Darcie hissed.
“Look, do you actually think I would let anything happen to her?”
Something in Cyber’s voice made me pause. Did he care for me? It sure sounded that way. And I wasn't sure how I felt about that. Because I hated him.
I really did.
“And anyway that's what Fang has ordered. I am on babysitting duties.”
The warm feeling that had been threatening to melt the ice around my heart disappeared. He didn't care about me. He never had. He was doing what his scary club president ordered, that was all.
“Cyber…”
I stepped into the room and all three pairs of eyes turned towards me. Darcie’s face was troubled.
“How much of that did you hear?”
I shrugged. “Enough.” I turned towards Cyber, waiting for him to meet my eyes. I didn’t know where this sudden fire in my belly had come from, but I kind of liked it. It sure as hell beat being the timid little mouse I had been.
“And you can tell Fang from me, I don't need a babysitter. If he wants me in his damn club house, he can come and get me himself.” Without waiting for his reply I turned on my heel and walked away.
