A lot of things had changed in Bree’s sheltered life since I had arrived in it and none of it was good. And all of it was because of me.
Being my mate came with dangers, I had many enemies. And they were dangers I wasn’t sure I could ask her to shoulder.
Still, I clung to the hope that she would one day want too. She had wanted my shirt on her, had said she needed it when I tried to take it off of her. The fact she had used my clothes in her nest gave me hope for the future.
It was that hope I held close to my chest when I pulled up outside her house.
The call had come in earlier that morning from her father. Bree was due to come back into her heat and he wanted to see me before that happened. And like a beta, I had dropped everything and gone. Because I was summoned. That was the power she had over me.
“Alpha Kaelan.”
I whirled, my hand still raised to knock at the sound of her voice. And the breath caught in my throat. She looked beautiful. Even more beautiful than the first time I had seen her if that was possible.
Her hair flowed around her shoulders, the dress billowed around her knees. And she was smiling.
“Bree,” I said her name like she was a goddess as I sucked in great lungfuls of her scent into my lungs.
The bond was stronger now. So strong there could be no doubt in my mind that she was the one meant for me.
“I’m glad you came.” She sounded suddenly shy. Her fingers tangled together.
I raised my eyebrow at that. I had assumed it had been her father that had wanted to talk to me not Bree personally.
“You wanted to see me?”
A blush heated her cheeks. She nodded. “Yes, is that ok?”
“Yes, it’s ok.” I wanted to go to her, wrap her tightly in my arms and hitch that pretty feminine skirt up around her hips.
“Would you walk with me?” Nervously she held out her hand, her fingers trembling. I didn’t hesitate, I entwined my fingers with hers. Bringing her hand up to my lips. “It would be an honour to walk with you, Bree.”

“You wanted to talk to me in private?” My voice was gritty with my need to stay in control as we walked hand in hand along the banks of a small stream that bordered her father’s estate.
I could tell she did, she kept chewing on her lips as sneaking glances at me. It was like she was warring with herself.
“Bree?” I pulled her to a stop but I didn’t wrap my arms around her like I wanted to. “You have to realise how hard this is for me. Being close to you and alone. I do not want to scare you but it might be best if we go back to the house.” I didn’t want to scare her but at the same time, I wanted her to know that she was in danger from me. I wouldn’t purposely hurt her or force myself on her but I wanted to bury myself in her body. And I just wasn’t sure she was ready.
“No.” She shook her head, taking me by surprise. “No, I don’t want to go back to the house. We can’t be private there.”
I swallowed hard. I didn’t dare let myself hope but it blossomed in my heart anyway. A warmth spreading through my chest. “Bree…”
“I will be going into heat soon.”
“I know, your father has kept me informed.” I said it softly, my fingers still holding hers. If she was surprised by my words she didn’t show it. She just looked thoughtful.
“I do not want to be unclaimed when that happens.”
I dropped her hand like it was a rock. Shaking my head I stepped back. “What are you asking of me, Bree?”
I knew what she was asking of me but I wanted her to say the words. Out loud. I needed to hear them spoken with her pretty lips.
“I am asking…” She gulped and the blush that heated her cheeks made her look like an angel. “You were kind to me.”
“You are my mate, of course, I was kind to you.” I needed more of a reason than being kind. Because I wasn’t kind, and if she thought I was then she would be upset later on.
“You protected me, came back for me.”
