“Please Cain.” Her words agonised. They would have broken any other man but not men like me and the Monk. We hadn’t got where we were today by showing compassion.

“Now Iris, we are just trying to have a pleasant dinner. Two friends. You would not want to spoil things between us now would you?” He levelled his eyes at her and she bowed her head almost instantly. “No of course not.”

“So…” Cain drew out the word. “I spoke to the Knight earlier.”

I started at the name of the third alpha who ran this city.

“And we are all in agreement that any beta who maliciously maims or kills one of our precious omegas will instantly be put to death. As a warning to the others.”

It happened in slow motion. The woman’s face was twisted. Becoming harsher, like a mask. She looked like she was already dead.

“What do you think Iris? As a doctor, whose job it is to protect life, what is your opinion on this?”

He was playing with her. Drawing out her fear. And he was enjoying it.

She didn’t answer him, her hands clutched at the table cloth until her knuckles popped. “Please Cain, I did it for you. For you.” She was wailing now.

“For me?” Slowly he tipped the crystal glass to his lips.

“For us. So we could be together.”

Together? They were together? I glanced between the two of them but said nothing. Again and again, I sipped at the red wine in my glass.

“We could never be together Iris. You knew this. Bree did nothing to you. Not ever. She is the mate of alpha Kaelan.”

“But you wanted her.” She fell to her knees at his feet, her fingers clawing at his trousers. “I didn’t know she was meant for another. She was always meant for you and I hated her. We all hated her.”

Slowly I raised my head. Something she said was grating on me. It was such a loaded thing to say. “We?” My voice was startling soft.

“Please alpha Cain.” She was openly crying now. Great racking sobs shook her whole body.

“Answer his question.”

“I…..”

“Is Bree in danger?” I was already on my feet. The wine glass falling forgotten from my fingers. It spilt like blood on the white cloth.

It was Cain that answered though. His face was thoughtful. “Go. Go and save your woman.”

I paused in the doorway, glancing back over my shoulder. “And her?”

“Iris will be executed before sundown. Unless you want to do it now?”

Of course, I wanted to do it. But I didn’t just want to kill her I wanted to make her suffer. Torture her. I would maybe start with her teeth or fingernails. Plucking them individually from her treacherous body.

But I didn’t have time for that. Not if Bree was in trouble.

At least Zane was with her.

At least there was that.

It seemed like months ago that I had been at the old manor that was Bree’s home her entire life, not just a few days. It was strange how much things had changed in that time. Not just my life but everyone’s around me. Meeting Bree had put things in motion all over the city and surrounding areas.

Not that I could let myself dwell on that. I would never forget my rash actions when it came to her. Because I had known, right from the moment that I had first caught her scent that she was the one meant to be mine and I wanted her.

And I was a man who took what he wanted.
