“I’m going to say yes,” I repeated, and it was more to myself than anyone else.

I was really going to do this. I was going to say yes.

Because it didn’t matter that we had only known each a few weeks, I was falling for him and falling for him hard.

It was a sobering and if I was honest a scary thought.

The sound of the door opening drew me back to the present. In front of me, Gems face split into a wide smile. “Looks like your old man is back early.”

I turned, sliding off my stool to go and greet him.

I had missed him. I just hadn’t realised it until he was standing back in front of him. “Truth.” I took a step towards him. Wanting to kiss his dust-covered face. And froze. He looked pissed. Really pissed. “Truth?” I called his name again softly “what’s wrong?”

He came to a stop right in front of me, but I didn’t get a chance to reach for him before the muzzle of a gun was pressed between my eyes. I couldn’t do anything but stare up at him.

The gun against my skin was cold. But not as cold as the look in Truths eyes.

“You wanna tell me who you really are Cali.” His voice was icy. “Or should I call you Calista.?”

My heart stuttered to a stop in my chest and then boomed back to life. So fast and hard, it was a surprise that the whole bar didn’t hear it.

I couldn’t think of anything but the cold metal of the gun against my skin. Fear ripped through me. But I couldn’t take my eyes from Truths face. It was like he was a stranger.

Dimly I was aware of Young Blood taking a step forward. “Truth, brother. Think about what you are doing. This is Cali. She’s your woman. Put your gun away.” He was speaking in a low voice. Trying to talk Truth back from the ledge.

“No, she isn’t.” Truths voice was steely, the calmness in it scarier than the gun against my skin. “She’s CPS,.” He said it like it made me a leper. “She is the snake in our midst. She is…” Truths voice broke, but I hardly had a chance to take in his words as the loud click of him cocking the gun hit my ears.

I lost control of my bladder.

Warm liquid trickled down my leg. Humiliation hit me, but I couldn’t move. For a second Truths, eyes softened as he glanced downward at the small puddle at my feet. And then the look was gone. And nothingness replaced it.

“You have to be wrong Truth, you have to be…” Gemma fell silent as his dead eyes lifted to her.

“I….” my mouth was too dry for words. I swallowed hard against the lump that had formed in my throat. “It’s true I work… but I haven’t. I would never …” why couldn’t I get my words out.

If he would just lower the gun, I would be able to think enough to explain. I would be able to make him understand. If he would just lower the gun and talk to me properly.

“Truth please.” I reached my hand out to him. Dropping it to my side as he glared at me. “Let me explain.”

“You have had weeks to tell me who you are. Weeks of sharing my fucking home and my bed and you lied. You LIED.”

I opened my mouth to tell him that I had tried to tell him. Several times, in fact,. And every time he had told me that my past didn’t matter. That he didn’t care who I was back home.

“Fuck, Cali.” Young Blood swore. “The club… do the club know?” He seemed scared for me. But I knew he wouldn’t help me. None of the people here would help me. Not one of them had made a move when Truth had pulled a gun on me.

I was completely on my own.

“They will by now.”

“They will….” Young Blood grimaced but didn’t finish his sentence. He didn’t have to. The club would kill me. Hell, it felt like Truth was going to kill me. The gun at my head was unwavering.

Could he really do it?

Yes, I glanced up at his dead eyes. Yeah, he would kill me. He would do it without even blinking.

“Yeah, they will.” Truth nodded. “Which is why I am here.”

“To kill her?” Gemma was suddenly there. I could see her in my peripheral vision. “Truth this is the woman you love, you can’t.”
