I was a damn coward.

“I should get back to Gem. I have to pack and …..” I crushed her under me, letting my full weight pin her to the mattress. “We still have tonight, stay here or go back to Gems. I don’t care. Just tell me,shit-eating I can see you tonight.”

She giggled. “You can see me tonight.”

“Good, tonight and tomorrow I promise we won’t be interrupted.”

“I leave tomorrow Truth.”

Why did she have to keep reminding me? “Or you could stay.”

Her face fell. And I instantly shifted my weight off of her. She didn’t want to stay. This was just a weekend thing. To her, at least.

“I have a job and ….”

“Don’t worry about it Cali, I get it. Get yourself showered and dressed and I’ll have someone get you back to Gems.”

“Truth.” Her band came down on my arm. And for a second I stared at it. “You don’t need to do that.” She finally said. “I can call a cab.”

Stuffing my feet into my jeans, tugging them up over my hips. I didn’t bother with underwear. “Ok.” And then I left her sitting there on the bed like the asshole I was. “Whatever you want.”

***

I was an asshole.

I had always known it, but this was the first time I had actually felt it. I hadn’t meant to dismiss her like I had. And I fucking hated the way she eyed me before sweeping out of the house without even talking to me.

It was raining, and she would rather wait outside for her ride then be in the same house as m,e.

Fuck.

I tugged at my hair. Trying to concentrate on what my brother was telling me. But my thoughts kept drifting back to her.

My ego had been dented, and my natural reaction was to treat her like an ass. And the worst thing was that I probably wouldn’t get the chance to make it right. She was leaving tomorrow and any memory of me she had, would be tainted by my words.

I was a damn fool.

“What’s up with you?”

I shot him a look. “I’m worried about Ruin. What exactly have they arrested him for?”

“Murder.”

“How can they do that if they have no body?” I knew they wouldn’t have found Avery's ex-husband’s body. I had got rid of it myself.

He shrugged. “No idea brother but they have him anyway.”

“Ruin didn’t kill anyone. I hope Avery knows that?”

Wicked shrugged again. And I went back to staring at my hands. “Go to her….”

I blinked up at him in surprise. “Why would I go to Avery?”

He shook his head. “Not Avery you dim-witted fuck. Cali. It’s obvious what’s on your mind,, and she’s just standing out there in the rain. I don’t know what the hell happened between you, but I’m guessing it’s your fault.” He winked.

“Yeah.” My head turned to the window. I could barely see her. The rain was coming down in a thick grey sheet. “Yeah, it was my fault.” I stood without another word. He was right. I needed to make this better.

Not caring that I was stepping out into a rainstorm barefoot I paused only long enough to grab one of the many leather jackets hanging from the hook by the door, I padded over to her.
