“It means maybe you should read more, so you have something in common with your girlfriend.”

“We have plenty in common.”

“Okay.” Ricki picked up the book and flipped it open.

Blythe wouldn’t let Ricki dismiss her so easily. “Long week?”

“You could say that.” Ricki still held the book in front of her face.

“Do you want to talk about it?”

“Not particularly.”

“Humor me.” Blythe slapped Ricki’s foot. “Come on. Don’t shut me out.”

Ricki turned the book over and dropped it onto her chest, leaving it open to the page she was reading.

“You’ve been grumpy all week.”

Ricki shook her head. “No, I haven’t.”

“Come on. We’re both tired. Just tell me.”

Ricki ran her hand over the spine of the book. “I ran into Missy.”

Blythe’s mouth curled into a frown. If there was one person Blythe hoped never to see again, it was Missy. She’d torn Ricki’s heart out and stomped on it with her narcissistic heels. That was only after she’d tried to destroy Blythe and Ricki’s friendship.

“When?”

“Last Thursday.”

“Where?”

Ricki picked up the book from her chest and wiggled to a sitting position against the headboard. She hugged the book to her. “Twilights.”

“What the fuck?” It was the bar where Missy bartended. “Why were you there?”

“Some of my coworkers wanted to stop after work.” Ricki said it casually, but Blythe felt the underlying tension.

“And you say no. Or you suggest a different bar.”

Ricki shrugged. “It wasn’t a big deal.”

“Really? Yet ever since, you’ve been moody and distant. Did you talk to her?”

Ricki shrugged.

“I’m taking that as a yes.”

“A little.”

“And?”

“And nothing. We just caught up with each other.” Ricki smiled. “She asked about you.”

“I don’t care.” Blythe spat out the words as if she’d swallowed something rancid.

“She follows you on TikTok.”
