Abby’s mouth fell open. “You’re teasing me.”

Blythe shook her head. “No, seriously. Mega-influencers are mostly celebrities, but there are a few creators who became celebrities just from their content. I’m about to hit the mid-tier. I’m hoping we create some amazing content this weekend to push me to the next level.”

Abby’s heart sank. Was this all a publicity stunt? No, they’d had fun. Just because Blythe recorded videos so she could give up being an Uber driver didn’t make it any less real.

Blythe pulled out her phone and opened her TikTok app. “Let me show you the…” Blythe slammed her hand against the seat. “What the fuck?”

“What’s wrong?” Abby slid closer to Blythe.

“The fucking little punk!”

Ricki snorted from the front seat. “Dapper&Dykonic?”

“Who else?” Blythe pushed the phone toward Abby. “She knew you were coming this weekend. Look at this shit.”

The video started with a young masculine woman, who appeared to be in her early twenties, standing in an airport holding a sign that read:Welcome to Minneapolis, my love!

“That’s Chase Daughtry. She calls herself Dapper&Dykonic.

“I just call her Dapper,” Ricki offered from the front seat.

Blythe glared at Ricki. “She stole my word—dykonic.”

After a beat, a pretty young woman raced across the airport and launched herself at Chase and wrapped her legs around Chase’s waist. Chase spun the woman around as they both laughed.

“They’ve only beendatingfor two weeks. What bullshit. I know she did it because you were coming.” Blythe stopped the video and watched it again from the beginning. Deep lines etched her forehead as she frowned at the screen.

“How many likes?” Ricki said over her shoulder as they idled at a stoplight.

“Don’t ask.” A dark cloud descended around Blythe. “Wait.” She tapped on her phone and let out a whoop. “Take that, you little twerp.” She wrapped her arm around Abby and pulled her closer. “We topped half a million. People love us.”

Abby stared at the phone, trying to comprehend that so many people had seen the video, let alone liked it.

Blythe flipped back to Dapper’s video. “Ha. She hasn’t even hit 300K.”

“Her girlfriend is pretty,” Abby said, feeling self-conscious.

Blythe paused the video and studied the screen. “I suppose.”

“You suppose? She looks like a model.” Abby drew her shoulders in, so she was no longer touching Blythe.

When Blythe didn’t respond, Ricki said, “I’m sure you’re prettier, right, Blythe?”

“Huh? Oh, yeah. Sorry.” Blythe looked at Abby with a gleam in her eyes. “I know just what we need to do.”

“About?” Abby said, giving Blythe a puzzled look.

Blythe slid away from Abby and rested her back against the car door. “Move back a little bit.” Blythe held up her cellphone. “I’ve got the perfect post. Show them who’s prettier.”

Abby put her hand against her face. “But I’m sweaty and gross from the day. I’m sure I don’t look very good.”

“Trust me.” Blythe moved the phone over a couple of inches as if centering Abby. “Just sit there and smile. I’ll do all the talking.”

“But I look horrible. Can’t it wait?”

“You’ll understand once I shoot it.” Blythe gave her a knee-weakening smile. “I won’t post it if you don’t like it, but at least let me try.”

Abby nodded.
