Ricki leaned back on the palms of her hands. “Well. The librarian has a spunky streak, I see.”
Abby shrugged. “I’m not sure what’s gotten into me tonight since I’m normally not so forward.”
“I like it.” Ricki grinned. “Break the librarian stereotype.”
“I doubt I’ll shatter any stereotypes.” Abby adjusted the bun on her head. “But I might surprise people now and then.”
Ricki grinned.
Abby glanced at the pile of books she’d pulled from the shelf and sighed. “I could stay here all night, but I should pick up my mess.”
“Stay as long as you’d like.”
“It’s after midnight,” Abby said after checking her watch. “I’m sure you want some sleep.”
“Sleep is for the weak.”
“And Blythe is gonna wonder what happened to me.”
“Oh, yeah.” Ricki jumped to her feet.
“I’m surprised she hasn’t come looking for me.”
Ricki reached her hand out and helped Abby to her feet. “When Blythe’s in the editing zone, she’s gone to the world. Don’t take it personal.”
Had she? Maybe a little. Blythe seemed more interested in capturing the moment than living it. That wasn’t fair. It was their first meeting, so it was probably Blythe’s way of hiding her nervousness.
Abby didn’t want to go down the path of whether she was taking it personal, so she said, “You shoot all of Blythe’s videos?” She bent and picked up one of the three stacks of books she’d created.
“Leave them,” Ricki said.
“I can’t do that.” Abby glanced at the book in her hand and hunted for the spot it belonged. “I’m the one that did it.”
“I insist.” Ricki took the book from Abby. “I don’t use the Dewey Decimal System, so you’ll never know where to put it back.”
“Is that a challenge?” Abby’s eyes narrowed.
“Oh, so the librarian has a competitive streak, too?” Ricki teased.
Abby grinned. “Maybe. It might not be Dewey, but I see patterns.”
Ricki snatched a pile of books from the floor. “Why don’t you shelf the books you’ve got, and I’ll put the rest away? Let’s see what you’ve got.”
“Challenge accepted.”
It took Abby less than five minutes to reshelve the books Ricki had given her. When she was done, she stepped back and spread her hands out to her sides. “Done. How’d I do?”
Ricki pretended to examine the shelves, but Abby knew she’d been watching the entire time. “Not too bad for the first time using the Ricki Decimal System.”
Abby raised her eyebrows. “I didn’t take that class in college.”
“It’s a niche class. Not many have.”
“Are you stalling? How did I do?”
“I thought I was harder to figure out.” Ricki’s shoulders dropped. “You only missed one.”
“One? No way. How did I miss one?” Abby put her hand on her hip and stared at Ricki.
