Abby’s face was flushed when she turned. “I’m sorry. Of course you do.”
She stepped into Blythe’s outstretched arms. “I’m sorry, too,” Blythe said into her ear.
When they separated, tears welled in Abby’s eyes. It saddened Blythe and made her want to hunt down Ricki and give her a piece of her mind. This was ridiculous.
“I know she doesn’t want to see me.” Abby rubbed her chest. “And it hurts.”
“The fool isn’t handling what happened well. I’ve tried to talk to her about it, but she just blows me off.”
“I thought about texting her, but—”
“You should.”
Abby shook her head. “No. If she didn’t respond, it’d crush me.”
Blythe smirked. “Do you have any sick days?”
“A lot.” Abby’s brow furrowed. “Why?”
“Call in sick on Monday.”
“Why?”
“Ricki will be home Sunday night, and she’ll think you’re gone.”
Abby stared at Blythe for several beats before she nodded. “Okay.”
CHAPTER 38
Abby hadn’t been ableto concentrate for the past two hours while they waited for Ricki to come home. They’d started out in the living room, but every sound from the street had Abby jumping, so they’d moved into the kitchen. It was better, but still Abby’s nerves were frayed.
Would Ricki be mad? Likely since they’d parked Abby’s car two streets away. How sad was it that Blythe feared Ricki would drive away if she realized Abby was still there?
Maybe this was a bad idea. What good could come out of it?Plenty. They could clear the air. Commit to rebuilding their friendship. Abby had come to terms with the fact that her feelings for Ricki had to change. But as much as she’d willed herself to move past them, she’d had little success. How could she when Ricki was avoiding her?
Once they mended their friendship and the trio returned to firmer ground, Abby could work on letting go of her romantic feelings toward Ricki. Regardless of her yearning, she’d never dothat to Blythe. She’d never forgive herself if she did anything to destroy or even damage Blythe and Ricki’s friendship.
She’d rather walk away, go back to being her boring self, before she’d let that happen. Who knows, maybe she wasn’t so boring anymore.
Right. No matter what, she’d always be herself, a boring librarian from the Midwest. Did she want to be anyone else? If it were Blythe’s choice, she’d be a jet setter, traveling the world and leading the life of an influencer. But was that what Abby wanted?
“Hey,” Blythe said.
Abby blinked and looked up from her computer screen. “Sorry, what?”
“You were in another world. I’ve asked you three times.”
“Can you repeat it one more time?” Abby gave Blythe an apologetic smile.
“Sure.” Blythe smiled. “Are you okay?”
Abby held up her unsteady hand. “Just nervous. What if she gets mad?”
“When she gets mad, she just runs away. She might yell at me, but she won’t yell at you.”
“Maybe I want her to yell at me,” Abby admitted. “At least it means she’s talking to me. I don’t think I can handle it if she turns around and leaves.”
“I’ll tie her up.” Blythe grinned. “A little BDSM to add to our threesome.” Blythe must have seen the horror written on Abby’s face because she held up her hands. “Too soon. I get it.”
