“This car,” he prompted, when whistles and cat calls from across the street reminded them of where they were standing.

“Right.”

“The alternator is bad. The timing belt and hoses are bad. The rotors are bad. All four tires are bald, which we knew. Everything is leaking, which we knew. The transmission is bad.”

“So, what do we do?” Her whole body craved his, and she couldn’t have him while he was delivering bad news. Lips were made for more important things, after all.

He stroked his hand down her hair, his eyes full of simmering fire and a little bit of censure. It was a good thing they’d decided to not harp on each other’s mistakes too much. Edward couldn’t be sorrier than he already was about Lucy if he tried. “So, we can pay five thousand to fix it, or sell it to one of the mechanics for five hundred. We’ll buy something else. Something reliable and not falling apart piece by piece. The mechanic’s willing to pick it up tomorrow, if you give him the word.”

“Sell it to him.”

“I like how you think.” He kissed her again, and when Marianne and Brandon hollered for them to get a room, he just picked her up and carried her into his backyard. His porch swing was another favorite spot, one away from prying eyes and snooping porch-watchers. Such was small town life.
