“But they opened the door, and I smell food.”

Ruth rolled her eyes. “Can’t keep you focused when there’s food around.”

Roan clapped. “Y’all can stop and come on in. There are plenty of leftovers.”

They clambered up the steps. Roan welcomed Mr. Hodges while I hugged Ruth and Alice.

“Merry Christmas,” I said.

“Merry Christmas,” they returned.

The four of them started to head inside, but I stopped, staring at a bright star in the sky that had caught my attention.

It winked and for the briefest of moments, I thought that my father was communicating with me, wishing me a merry Christmas.

Roan’s arm snaked over my shoulder. “Everything okay?”

A smile lit my face and warmed me all the way to my toes. “Yeah,” I answered. “Everything is perfect.”

He led me inside to join the others so that we could eat, drink, be merry and appreciate one another and the fact that we were among the living.
