“Wait,” Kansas paused at the bathroom. My heart sunk as he hurried in and ruffled through my cabinet, returning with handfuls of pill bottles. “Which ones do you need?”
“There’s no time,” I huffed and opened my bag. “Put them all in here. I’ll explain later. I’m not…” I looked from one to the other, pleading for them to believe me. “I’m not crazy.”
“We know, princess. We know, now come on.” Constantine urged me forward.
Sirens greeted us as we reached the downstairs floor. Leaving everything but the bag in my hands, we hurried to Constantine's car and sped off.
I looked back and saw blue and red lights, but they didn't follow us. I felt only a smidge of relief as I decided that they must have stopped at the house and were finding Rem's body now.
“You’re not mad that I didn’t tell you?” I looked down at my lap in shame. My entire life after I’d escaped the Church I’d struggled to figure out why I was the way that I was. It wasn’t until after high school that I’d seen the right doctor, who helped me realize what exactly my mind was battling. “You don’t think I’m…”
“We will never use that word, Eisley.” Kansas swore. “You don’t ever have to hide anything from us ever again. We’ll navigate all of this together.”
I sank into the seat, relief washing over me. I knew I could trust them both. I loved them both.
“While we’re confessing things…” Constantine glanced over. “Those flowers…”
I gasped. “No! You two?” I looked back and forth between them.
“I think we may have taken the joke a little too far,” Kansas cringed.
“A bit!” I swatted them both, and felt a little less uneasy. I had nothing to worry about. No stalkers, no killers, no cult leaders, just these two who’d protect me with their life.
"What now, princess?" Constantine smirked as we sped off into the night.
"You're not afraid they'll catch us?" I asked. I was sitting in the middle seat and neither of them felt tense in the slightest.
"Nah. Sure, they'll assume we did it all. Or you, whatever." Kansas laughed dryly. "But they aren't going to look past Shelley Vale. If they do, they'll have to ask themselves why they were targeted, and their parents aren't going to let their dirty secrets be exposed."
"We're just gonna get away with it?"
Constantine snickered.
"As long as you listen to what I say. Do you remember the exact words I told you ten years ago?"
I nodded, and he continued, "Don't talk to anyone."
He took one hand off the wheel and reached for mine.
"Don't look back." Kansas took my other hand.
"Just run." I squeezed both of theirs.
And we did.
All three of us, right out of Shelley Vale and into eternity, reanimated, rich, and in love.
The End.
