Andy caught my lips again as I backed off, sweeter this time.

The chain glittered against his skin as he tucked the ring under his jumper.

My jumper.Ourjumper. However it worked.

“I love it,” Andy said, beaming at me. “I loveyou.”

“Just as well if you’re going to marry me,” I said, nervous laughter getting the better of me.

“I am going to marry you,” Andy said.

And even though we were both kneeling on the freezing footpath, being stared at by every soul remaining in London, about to be snowed under, and shivering, I couldn’t remember ever being happier.

“Beat me to it,” he continued. “I was planning to ask you for New Year’s.”

Nerves turned instantly to relief, more laughter welling up. I surged forward, sealing my lips over Andy’s, trying to pour all the love and happiness and excitement I felt into his mouth so he could feel it, too.

I thought, based on the way he hummed back, that perhaps he really could feel it.

We picked ourselves up, both grinning like idiots at each other. The last few rays of sunlight for the day caught Andy’s eyes, making them glow with warmth.

He still looked like an angel to me. My angel.

And this still felt very much like a Christmas miracle.

“Back, umm… back to the little apartment, then?” I asked, rubbing the back of my neck.

“Probably better if I don’t jump on you in public, yeah,” Andy said.

A rush of heat went straight to my cheeks, but I knew Andy liked it when he made me blush.

“Probably better,” I mumbled, looking down at my feet but unable to stop myself smiling.

Andy was going to marry me.Andywas going to marryme. Plain old Kit.

If I thought last Christmas had been wonderful, this one was transcendent.

“Hey, Kit?” Andy spoke up as we turned for the apartment, slipping his hand into mine for the walk.

“Mm?”

“This is kind of a fairytale ending, huh? The handsome prince lives happily ever after.”

I always rather liked it when he called me handsome.

“I’m hoping it’s more of a middle,” I said. “There’s a lot more to our story yet.”
