Epilogue

Asher (one week later)

Theo and I sat on his parents’ sofa watching SportsCenter. My leap over that asshole on the Bruins had been replayed thousands of times. Theo and I got a call from Mr. Howard with an official offer to join the Reading Royals.

Both Theo and I had gotten several offers, but the Royals were the only team that wanted us together, which made the decision for us.

I didn’t want to spend any time away from Theo. Things were just starting to settle down, and I wanted as much time with him as possible.

Forever.

“I’m gonna grab something to drink. You want anything?” Theo asked.

“Just some water, thank you.” He kissed me, then went into the kitchen.

My phone buzzed a moment later in my pocket. I reached for it and nearly choked when I saw the text.

Mom: I see you’re on your way to some farm league inPennsylvania. I also saw the speech you gave about the Morettis. Congratulations are in order, but please don’t forget who raised you. I’m your mother, and I worked hard to put clothes on your back and food on the table. Don’t forget that when you get to the NHL.

My hand shook as I looked at the text. A tidal wave of rage surged within me, and I wanted nothing more than to—

Hmm…

I quickly scanned the internet to find what I wanted before texting back:

Me: Eat my ass, Mom.

Then I sent her the infamous picture of Theo and me.

Me: Never mind, my boyfriend already did.

The three dots appeared, but I blocked her before she could respond. As far as I was concerned, those were the last words I’d ever say to that woman.

Theo came back with two glasses of water and asked, “You good, Red?”

Yeah, I was. I was really good. “Never better, Big Boy.”

The End
