“I’m fine,” Edna answered honestly. She truly was—right now, at least. “I didnae know wot tae expect, but that wasnae it.”

Her husband arched a brow. “I dinnae know if that is a compliment or a complaint.”

“It was a compliment,” she told him, pressing her hand to his cheek. “Unless ye think ye can do better.”

Malcolm let out a bark of laughter. “Give me a moment, lass, and then we will see wot I can do.”

Smirking, Edna snuggled into the covers, and Malcolm pulled her to his sweaty body instead, his scent all around her. She didn’t know if she was supposed to feel this way, but the way she did feel was something that Edna could feel for the rest of her days and be happy with it.

“I love ye, Malcolm,” she said softly, feeling the pull of sleep on her weary bones.

He pressed his lips to her temple. “I love ye too, Edna. Forever and always.”

Forever was a long time, but Edna wouldn’t want it any other way.
