I wasn’t their mom, but I hoped to be their friend, anyway.

We stepped outside, and already some crazy birds were talking in the trees. The winter was finally giving up.

A little.

They were expecting it to be down in the freezing temperatures in a few days.

But alas, this was Kansas winter. Weather in the 60’s one day, and the 30’s the next.

We hoped to get most of his stuff moved out of the house and loaded up. What he was going to do with all the stuff, we had no idea. There were a lot of years of stuff in that house.

But that’s what storage was for, right? The storage bin was next to the truck, and we’d been loading bigger things into that for three days.

We loaded a couple more boxes of personal things onto the truck.

“You know, I think that’s the first time you outright called me that.”

“What?”

“Your boyfriend.”

I smiled “Well, it was the best way to explain what this is.”

“I think you just like me.”

“Nah, I don’t like you,” I said.

“You don’t?” His eyebrow went up.

“No, Shaun, I don’t like you. I think I love you.”

He grabbed me and pulled me to him. “Well, now. I think I love you too.”

“That’s good. Because this could have been really embarrassing.”

He leaned down and kissed me.

Damn, it felt good.

Like I was exactly where I needed to be.

A little less frozen.

A little more relaxed.
