I think about a woman who died centuries ago. A woman he loved. A woman who might not have stayed dead.

“Should we tell Drayke?”

“He’ll find out soon enough.” Selene’s expression hardens with determination. “Whatever he’s facing, he thinks he has to face it by himself.”

“He’s wrong.”

“Yes.” She meets my gaze. Fire-Bringer to Fire-Bringer. Sister to sister. “He is.”

The claiming mark on my chest pulses. Rurik, sensing my unease from miles away, his fire reaching for mine across the distance. I press my palm against it, letting his warmth steady me.

We fought one war. Won one battle. Killed one queen.

But the shadows are stirring. The past is rising. And somewhere out there, the Brotherhood’s most broken member is walking alone into a darkness that might swallow him whole.

“We should get some sleep,” Selene says. “Something tells me we’re going to need it.”

I nod. But I don’t move. Not yet.

I stand on the ramparts and watch the shadows where Zyphon disappeared. Watch the darkness that took him.

And I wonder what happens when the dead don’t stay buried.
