The corner of Tane’s mouth lifted. “True.”
“Thanks again for the assist,” Colbie said as she and Marc sat at the table.
“Always happy to help.”
Kai snorted. “You mean always happy to kill some monsters.”
Tane smiled. “Yeah.”
“When mom lets you.”
“Trust me, Kaitoa, keeping your mother happy is my main priority in life.” His gaze shifted to Colbie. “You doing okay, Colbie? Crashing is no fun.”
“I’m good, Uncle Tane. Hoping tonevercrash again, though.”
“Hell yeah.” Marc tugged on the end of her braid.
“Marc taking good care of you?”
She smiled at my brother. “He is.”
The other man with Tane chuckled.
Devlin Gray was a former spy and he looked the part. While most of the people in Hemi’s bar wore jeans, Devlin wore a pair of trousers with a tailored white shirt. He had a movie-star handsome face, high cheekbones, and a touch of gray at his temples.
“How’s Thena, Uncle Devlin?” Colbie asked.
The man slid his hands into the pockets of his trousers and smiled. “She’s good. Enjoying her studies in London.” He had a crisp British accent despite living in Australia for years. “Taylor and I can’t believe it’s been eighteen months since she left.”
As Devlin talked about his daughter’s studies, my gaze shifted to Kai. He’d straightened and was watching Devlin intently.
“So Athena’s having fun over there?” Kai asked.
“Yes. Having a blast. I’m glad that she’s coming home soon, though. Taylor and I have missed her.”
Athena Gray was a little younger than us. About to turn twenty-five, wicked smart, and seriously beautiful. Iremembered her as a tiny, pretty thing running to keep up with the older kids. I kept watching Kai, seeing something on his face.
Hell, I knew that look. It was the same look I saw in the mirror when I thought about Kai’s sister.
I locked that thought down fast.
Amaia Rahia was off limits.
“All right, we’ll let you guys get back to your drinks,” Tane said.
Suddenly, a loud siren blared.
We all shot to our feet. My muscles tensed.
“That’s the wall siren.” Jameson spun and ran for the door of the bar.
“Stay here,” Marc said to Colbie before he jogged after our squad leader.
I rounded the table, Kai, North, and Jess moving with me.
“Like hell,” Colbie muttered as she marched toward the door.
As a group, Hunter Squad sprinted to the main gate. I saw it was open, and beyond it, I heard carbine fire.
