“Out of the way,” I clarified. “Can we lock down the theatre or make sure they don’t get caught in the crossfire?”

The holographic image changed, and I braced my hands on the desk and leaned forward. “Who is this?” Then, before Dawz could respond, I answered my own question. “Athena.”

The briefing had described her as striking and dark-haired, but it had not done her justice. I forgot to breathe as I stared, transfixed by the woman with waves of ebony hair that flowed over pale shoulders.

“Yes, Raas,” my majak said. “She was the one who took charge in hiding the battle chief and human.”

“Beautiful and brave,” I said to myself as my pulse danced and my skin prickled with awareness.

I had not entirely embraced Wrexxon’s idea of war brides, although I understood the leverage it gave us over potentially treacherous alliances. But as I gazed at the flickering image of Athena, I had a change of heart. Perhaps it was time for me to take a war bride of my own.

Striding toward the door, I walked through the flickering image of the human as I called over my shoulder. “Tell the crew to ready a shuttle for me. I will join the team on the surface.”
