“Kára?”
“I will explain when we get there. This is…important.” Her voice cracked, and even though she was every bit as tall as he was at six-foot-four, she curled her shoulders inward and rested her forehead against his. “You are precious to me. Do me this one favor?”
“Yeah. Okay. Let me lock up.” Pulling a key from his pocket, he linked their fingers. “How far is yer place?”
“Two kilometers.” She glanced around at the empty streets, tensing at his back, and as soon as he’d locked up, she tugged him around the rear of the pub.
They stuck to the shadows and smaller streets, and Kára stopped every few minutes, standing as still as a statue, then checking behind them before setting off again.
“Yer lookin’ for somethin’. What is it?”
She shook her head and motioned for him to keep his voice down. Ewan leaned close so he could whisper in her ear. “Kára, I was trained for years as a Hunter. Let me help ya’.”
“I am only ensuring we are not followed.”
The town fell away step by step, and Kára’s cool fingers kept a firm grip on his as they reached a long stone path darkened by tall trees. “My home is down here,” she said with a weak smile.
Though he could not shake the feeling that he’d come to regret this night, he couldn’t ignore the pull he felt towards her, and she was scared.
Ya’ think ya’ can protect a vampire? Yer a fool.
Yet, he could do nothing else but follow her and try to keep her safe. “I’m here, luv. And I’ll stay until morning.”
His words seemed to bolster her, and relief smoothed her strong, Nordic features.
The small cottage was painted light green, the windows shuttered. Kára unlocked the door and waved Ewan inside. He barely got a chance to take in the single couch in the corner of the sparse living space before she had him in the bedroom.
Here, she lived. At least a little. The large bed was done up in a deep, royal blue, rumpled with fluffy pillows strewn across the top. A small pile of clothing rested in a basket, all black.
“Kára…”
“Sex first, talk later. I cannot control myself around you, Ewan.” She stripped off his jacket, then his shirt, and ran her hands up and down his chest. “I have been thinking about you all night, and my mind…is not clear.”
Ewan shivered as her fingers loosed his belt and lowered his zipper. “Ya’ put a spell on me somehow.”
His cock strained against his boxers, and Kára palmed his length. “No spell. No glamour. I promise. Now kiss me.”
He obliged without hesitation, and her nipples tightened through the thin black shirt she wore. Fuck, he wanted to taste them. To capture each bud between his teeth and tug until she was begging.
When she parted her lips, Ewan swept his tongue along hers in a slow, sensual dance, then pressed her against the wall so she could feel his arousal. “I want ya’ naked. Now.”
Ewan forgot about everything when she stripped out of her clothes in the space of a single blink. Her lithe, toned body practically sung to him, and he cupped her small breasts, running his thumbs over her dusky nipples. Her mewl pleased him, and he pinched, hard.
“Ewan,” she cried, and her knees buckled. He caught her before she fell, so light in his arms. “Make me yours.”
“Oh, I plan on it, luv. Many, many times.”
Chapter Six
Kára
She restedher head on her human’s chest and listened to his heart beat. His warm hand skated up and down her back over her scars, and his blood flowed through her. “Ewan?”
“Yeah, luv?” He sounded like he was on the edge of sleep, and when she wriggled up to meet his gaze, she found half-lidded, bleary eyes.
“We need to talk.”
“Fuck me. This is only our second night together, Kára. Ya’ can’t possibly want to end this already.” Despite his words, part of him looked relieved, and he started to pull back the blankets before she stopped him.
