That was a damn good plan. He could do this right. He had to. So he took her hands and dropped to one knee.

Her mouth gaped open. “What are you doing?”

“I’ve never loved anybody like I love you, because you’re my heart, Samantha Steel.” He let his drawl free, feeling his family all around him for the first time in way too long. “Marry me.”

She blinked. “I, ah, I.”

He grinned. “Try again.”

“Yes,” she breathed. “Okay. I mean, yes.”

He stood and kissed her, taking her mouth and vowing to himself that she’d never want for anything. The woman would never doubt him or herself, for that matter. He might be darker than before, deadlier, but he could love deeper, too. He’d make sure of it.

Finally, he leaned back. “I love you.”

She smiled. “I love you more.”

That was truly impossible, and now he had years to prove it to her. So he leaned down and kissed her again, putting every promise he’d ever make into that one act. While he still missed his family and wished they could know Sami, something told him, deep down, that they knew.

And they were finally at peace.

In the worst of times, he and Sami had found love, and he was never letting go.
