“Quite certain. We decided this together.” Ada smiled easily, her heart overflowing with her plan. “I know it was what Archie would have wanted too. He was a selfless man.”

“I see.” Mrs. Grant set the envelope in her lap. “In that case, I thank you on behalf of the Manor and the council members.” She paused. “Is there something you wish in return?”

Ada started to shake her head, but then she hesitated. “Is there some way I could continue to volunteer at the Manor?”

“I’m sure we could come up with something. There are always women in need. I will be in touch.”

Ada stood, as did her hostess. “This is a wonderful organization. It helped me through a time in my life that I wasn’t sure I would be able to overcome.”

Mrs. Grant smiled kindly. “That is why we’re here.”

As Ada left, she paused before climbing into the carriage that would take her back to London. She glanced at the stately Manor and sighed, but it wasn’t with regret that she wouldn’t be back here to stay.

It was contentment.

She entered the carriage and smiled as she returned to her future husband and daughter.
