Suddenly, the door to the office burst open, and I scowled as Stella marched in with a huge grin on her face. I suppressed the anger that I felt when I saw her and forced a smile on my face.
“I was wondering if you would be coming by today,” I said. “Would you like to go out for lunch?”
“That sounds wonderful,” she said, walking over and planting a kiss on my lips. “But I believe you and I need to have a conversation.”
“About what?” I asked, wondering what she was up to now.
“Your father,” she said with a smirk. “You have been going along with what I want so far, and if you keep doing what I say, your secret will stay safe with me. But don’t do as I say, and the entire world will know what a corrupt lawyer your father is. Just imagine, the world will know about the bribes he took and the innocent people he sent to jail. Your entire firm will be ruined; every case this firm has ever tried will be viewed suspiciously. All those people you have worked for all these years, every single one of them will suffer. Now, we wouldn’t want that to happen, would we?”
“What do you want, Stella?” I said scathingly.
“I know about you and Hillary,” she whispered. “I know you two were together last night. I warned you, Gale. I told you to stay away from her. I told you that you are to be mine. If you had just done what I told you, no one would have gotten hurt. But now – now it’s too late.”
“What have you done!” I said, standing up.
“Nothing yet,” she said with a smirk. “And nothing will happen if you deliberately lose the Avery case. Go to court. Pretend to give it your best shot. Lose the case, and I will disappear from your life forever. But refuse to do so, and I will tell the world the truth about your father. The ball is in your court now, Gale. Whatever will you do?”
