“How else would I have begun my rule of your planet?”
The arrogance had Aries clenching his fists. “Think again. You chose the wrong solar system to crash.”
“On the contrary, this world is ideal to my needs. Pity, the scouts ended up destroyed. It would have been useful to have some. So much easier to conquer a country when you control the leaders.”
“I’m surprised you haven’t taken over one of their bodies.” Aries’ sarcastic rejoinder.
“I would, if they weren’t so physically hideous. Old men and women lacking vigor. Not to mention, my intention is to bring everyone under my dominion. I have a better plan to achieve that than by merely becoming a president or king of a single country.”
“A plan that will fail.” While Aries had never tried before, he sent a thought to Tower, projected it as loudly as he could in his mind.
“You think you can stop me?”
The sword that appeared in Aries’ grip swung upward, starlight making its sharp edge glint. “Yeah, I do.”
The being laughed. “Kill this shell if it pleases. It won’t matter, for I shall simply find another. And even if I didn’t, let ussay you found a way to stop me; it is already too late. More are coming.”
“How many?” Aries barked.
“It could be one and you’d still, as the humans would say, be screwed. In a few short months, humanity will bow, beg, feed, and entertain. Although I do believe we shall reserve a more fitting and painful fate for the Zodiac Warriors.”
“Good luck with that. We’ve been foiling you at every turn and will continue to do so.”
“Such misplaced optimism. I look forward to seeing the defeat on your face, to hear you pleading as I murder your mate and eviscerate your child.”
The threat to the two people he loved most in the world had Aries acting without thinking. The sword flew, and it didn’t miss. He impaled the being in the chest, right through the heart. The cloaked figure fell to a knee but managed one last gasp. “You might have killed this shell, but it matters not, since there’s an entire planet of bodies waiting for me. Until we meet again.”
With that, the body died, and as it fell to the ground, a ball of light exploded from it and shot into the sky.
Fuck.
How would he find the being? And more importantly, how could it be destroyed? Because the one thing he did know, everything could die.
As Aries turned around to head back inside, Sage exited, holding Olivia’s hand. The pair of them stared at and through Aries before speaking in an eerie synchronized cadence that lifted the hairs on his nape.
“As great evil arises promising destruction, there is but a single, narrow branch to victory. To the dusty red planet, the water bearer must journey to seek audience with the queen who once was. The queen who lost everything fighting the ancient enemy. The queen who will demand the impossible in exchangefor saving humanity. But beware, for once the water bearer sets upon this path, there is no return, and the stars shall weep.”
