He pulled me back down on his chest, rearranging me so I was now completely lying on top of him. “I told your mother that we got married, and that’s why you couldn’t marry David.”
My body went still and my eyes felt like they were going to pop out of my head. “Did you just say that—“
“We got married. Correct.” His arms tightened around me. “We both know that was the only thing that would force her to let you go.”
I wheezed out a breath, unsure how to respond.
Mason took that as his cue to keep going. “She threatened that she would annul our fake marriage—which of course she didn’t know was fake—and sue me. Things got a little heated, and I may have also hinted at the possibility of a pregnancy.”
My lungs filled with air, and I shot up to kneeling, straddling him. “Are you crazy? Why would you do that? I could make my peace with a fake marriage. But pregnancy?”
“I panicked. She’s scary when she’s angry. I figured we’d get there eventually. So I wasn’treallylying. After all, I didn’t specify if you were already pregnant.”
I glared at him. “I don’t know if I should be mad at you or impressed. I haven’t heard a word from my mother. So your ploy seems to have worked.”
He ran his hands up my thighs, stopping at my butt and gripping it, pulling me closer. “I vote you go with impressed.”
His hands made their way up my back, pulling me down until our faces were almost touching.
He studied me with tight features, his light words betraying his worry. There was nothing else to do but to be grateful for what he had done for me. I hated that he felt unsure about his actions; they meant so much to me, now that I had a minute to think about them.
“You set me free. Thank you. I’ll never forget this,” I said and meant every word of it.
“I would do anything for you. You are the one temptation I can’t resist, and I don’t plan on ever giving you up.”
“I think you should show me just how much of a temptation you think I am. I can barely remember the last time.”
And show me he did. He was my missing piece, the holder of my heart, the one I wanted to spend the rest of my life with. I had finally found my place in the world and couldn’t wait to see what the future had in store. Because as long as I had Mason by my side, I was ready for anything.
The end (for now)
