“Baby’s the size of a blueberry right now, so unfortunately, it’s all me wantin’ to eat everythin’ in sight. Which, considerin’ I usually lose my appetite in the first trimester, I’m preparin’ for the worst heartburn and even more stretch marks to come.”

“Good, I love them on you.”

She wrinkles her nose. “Then you’ll be the one to slather me in lotion and cream every night.”

“Rub my hands all over your naked body? Oh, no.”

With a dramatic eye roll, she laughs.

I pull out the leather jewelry box tucked in my pocket and hold it out for her. “Happy Birthday, love.”

She opened a bunch of gifts at the party, but I wanted to keep this one for her to open privately.

She slowly opens it, revealing the gold heart-shaped locket necklace.

“Oh wow, this is beautiful.” She rubs the pad of her thumb over the engraved text that readsMy Darlings.

“Open it.”

As soon as she does, her jaw drops and she gasps. “Colton.”

“Do you like it?”

On the left side of the locket is a photo of Sam and Lily with Remy that I took in front of the cabin a couple weeks ago. On the right side is the ultrasound she had last week. The baby is still small, so I zoomed in to fill the space.

“I-I love it, oh my gosh.” She sniffs, then wipes her cheek. “I can’t believe you did this.”

Standing, I round the table and swipe her hair off to one shoulder. “Let me put it on for you.”

Once she hands it to me, I unclasp it and wrap it around her neck until it’s clasped again. Then I readjust her hair and check out the finished look.

“Perfect. Absolutely beautiful on you.”

“I’m never takin’ this off,” she insists, holding the locket between two fingers. “Thank you.”

“You’re very welcome.” I kiss the top of her head, then point to her left hand that’s touching the locket. “Someday soon, I’ll put a ring on that finger.”

Amelia

TWO MONTHS LATER

“What’re we doin’?”I ask, following him into the bedroom. We’re gonna be late for our dinner reservations if we don’t leave soon.

He squeezes my hand before opening the door, and as soon as we walk in, I see rose petals covering the floor and Remy on the bed with a cute little bow tie around his collar.

“Oh my God.”

Although we’ve talked about marriage, I’m somehow emotionally unprepared for him to actually propose. It doesn’t help that I’m overly hormonal as it is, but taking this next step in our relationship is a huge deal.

“I know you don’t believe in love at first sight, but from the moment I saw you across the venue, I felt it. My stomach had never done that weird fluttery thing before until my eyes landed on yours. Something drew me to you that night and never let me forget you.

“So I was hopin’ since I never got to play your fake husband, you’ll allow me to become your real husband.”

He takes my hand and gets down on one knee, looking so handsome in his black suit and tie. We have plans for dinner tonight since his parents are watching the kids, so we’re both already dressed up.

“Amelia, darlin’. You are the love of my life, and I promise to be everythin’ you want and more.”
