“Well, if Troy ever wants to come work for me, you could move up here. We’ve got plenty of animals.”

“And bywork, you mean…”

“Put his hackin’ and networkin’ skills to use.”

Samuel chuckles. “Are you purposely being vague?”

“Yes.” The SUV swerves, then stops abruptly. “We’re here, Amelia.”

chapter twenty-nine

Colton

The next twenty-fourhours are chaotic and consumed by police officers, lawyers, and family members stopping in. I haven’t left Amelia’s side, and even when visiting hours were over, I refused to leave her.

She has a mild concussion and needed a few stitches on her head. It could’ve been worse considering how hard she fell, but the urge to find her mother myself and show her the same treatment is strong.

As soon as Maddox told them she might be pregnant, they ran a blood test to verify. When that came back positive, they did a vaginal ultrasound to confirm the heartbeat and that everything looked good for how early she was.

A mixture of excitement and fear swam through me the moment I heard the little flutter and saw it on the screen.

Excited to start a family with her and become a dad.

Fear that it’ll somehow be taken away from me.

After filing a report with the local police department and showing them the footage of her mom physically assaulting her, they put a warrant out for her arrest. Given who she is and the fact that her husband served as mayor years ago, I’m notholding my breath that they’ll actually charge her with anything. But I’m hoping it’ll be enough to keep her away from Amelia and her trust fund for good.

And if she doesn’t, Maddox won’t think twice about reminding her what happens if she contacts Amelia again. Besides the video of her whacking Amelia over the head, he has plenty of financial dirt on her that she won’t want to get out publicly. It’d be enough to pique the FBI’s curiosity.

“Ready to go home?” I smile as she sits on the bed, dressed, and anxious to leave.

“Desperately. I miss the kids. And I hate being so far away from ’em. Remy too.”

“Bellamy and Bodie are takin’ good care of ’em. My mom and Aunt JoJo are probably there now, too. They’re gonna swarm you, just a warnin’.”

“I don’t mind.”

A knock pulls my attention to the door, and I find Maddox standing there.

“Hey, c’mon in.”

“I heard congratulations are in order.” He smacks my shoulder. “Daddy Colt.”

Barking out a laugh, I shake my head at his choice of nickname. “Thanks.”

“How ya feelin’?” he asks Amelia.

“Not too bad. Mostly thanks to you.”

“It was fun.”

“Fun?” I spit out. “I was close to havin’ a panic attack.”

It’s a good thing Bodie drove me because I could barely breathe thinking about Amelia and what condition she was in.

“I live for the thrill.” He smirks. “Sneakin’ into a strange house, threatenin’ to shoot someone, and carryin’ you out like a hero. That’s what I call an adventure.”

“Your cousin lowkey scares me,” Amelia murmurs before raising her voice. “But I very much appreciate you rescuin’ me. Who knows what she was plannin’ to do with me.”
